Friendly reminder from ethics commission: Don’t hire your kids

This statement went out today from the Ohio Ethics Commission:

As summer approaches and many high school and college students seek summer jobs (sometimes seasonal, part-time jobs like lifeguards and camp counselors with cities, villages, school districts, and other public agencies that offer special summer programs) the Ohio Ethics Commission is reminding public officials and employees about the restrictions in the Ethics Law against hiring their family members. Please see attached a bulletin issued last year outlining these restrictions.

Here is their bulletin:

EducationandPublicInfo_NepotismReminder

Last I checked, Commission President Gregory Jolivette and Commissioner Charles Furmon were both under ethics commission investigation for allegedly hiring family members. Jolivette specifically admits he hired his son for summer employment.

This reminder letter obviously isn’t worth the paper it is written on. The Butler County GOP Executive Committee trumps the Ohio Ethics Commission. The list of complaints grows longer, and the investigations stall due to it being an election cycle. We wouldn’t want anything as silly as a felony to interfere with a candidate getting elected (or re-elected). Anyone surprised?

Josh, You continue to mis-state the facts. Mr. Furmon is not under ethics investigations for hiring family members.

I find it interesting that with all the people who say that the public sector should be run more like the private sector, the restriction against hiring family members in the public sector goes entirely contrary to what has been the norm for generations in the private sector. So only PARTS of the public sector should emulate the private sector.

How long has it been since the complaint was filed against Frumon. It seems that the Ethics Commission will never come right out and say an investigation is completed or that the complaint was found to have no merit. This cloud has been hanging over Furmon for years now; the Ethics Commission clearly isn’t going to do anything but the Journal News will continue to recycle the issue into perpetuity. Yet it continues to be OK for a Commissioner to have a girl friend as a agency department head, go figure.

I wonder which one of Jolivettes opponents gave the Journal News this Bulletin, or maybe it was Don Dixon or Rick Jones. But one can be sure it was from one of these fine office holders.

I say we get rid of all of them. Each one is crooked in their own way. I think Furmon is the dirtiest one of all but the others need to go as well. We need a fresh start at the Commissioners Office and across the board in Butler County, too many years of favors and backstabbing have us where we are at today. Furmon has passed blame on to other office holders for year, including Kay Rogers which I think will come back to bite him someday. So the long and short of it is this, get rid of all 3 of them and lets get people in their who are not endorsed or part of the GOP and lets give them a chance to turn it around. My opinion is that we will be pleasantly surprised.

Concerned citizen, you are correct on all counts. The GOP/Boehner/Lang/Fox/Ellis/Rogers/Nepotism/Conflict of Interest Era needs to be put behind us.

Don’t hire your kid but it’s Ok if you have say over a department ran by your girl friend that’s millions of dollars. The Ethics Commission is a joke.
