Commissioners roll back elections board cuts
Butler County commissioners peeled back budget cuts to the Board of Elections this morning, Oct. 26, amid concerns about running a successful election next month.
Commissioners voted 2-0 to reimburse the board of elections $297,000 of the $379,017 slashed from the agency’s budget in July as part of a 2009 budget that had a $5.4 million shortfall.
Commission President Donald Dixon abstained from this morning’s vote, as he often does with issues involving the board of elections because of his personal relationship with agency director Betty McGary.
Dixon did vote against the July budget cuts, however, saying the cuts should have been spread more evenly across the board.
After the money was pulled from her agency’s budget after the vote in July, McGary said that if she laid off enough people to make the cuts, “you simply wouldn’t have enough staff to run the November election, that just wouldn’t be possible.”
County Administrator Tim Williams said this morning that the money given back to the elections board will come from the county’s ailing general fund, possibly from dwindling cash reserves.
“It depends on where the final number (of county revenue dollars this year) ends up,” Williams said.
County officials are preparing to draft a 2010 budget in coming weeks that will include wrestling with an estimated $6.6 million shortfall because tax and investment revenues have plummeted amid recession.

Let me get this straight…nobody likes their budget to get cut, however…if you happen to be engaged to and living with the Commission President and complain about it, you can get your budget revised back up? WOW! The politics of this County are simply so corrupt that they can do things like this publicly and still get away with it. Working within a budget means just that. How about some pay cuts?

Ok, let’s assume that Sheriff Jones shows up at the next meeting making the same statement “you simply wouldn’t have enough staff to protect the citizens, that just wouldn’t be possible.” without his budget being reinstated. What to the commissioner’s do then? Ability to run and election vs. public safety? But then again the sheriff isn’t sleeping with the commission president.

I’d bet the family farm that there will be an ethics complaint filed on Dixon by the end of October. The vote in July, those he made in the past and what influence he has behind closed doors will have to be explained. But we’ll never know about the pillow talk will we.

It is impossible to have a mature discussion on political issues on this blog. Point is these first three are all concerned about who Dixon lives with - what does he talk about in bed at night - blah, blah, blah nothing but trash talk. Who cares?? Either get a life or get yourselves a girlfriend too. Sounds to me like your lives are so boring you are constantly trying to find excitement in his…sick, sick, sick. I’m thru with this blog. If I want to read this kind of trash, I’ll go buy the National Enquirer.

JR - You seem to know an awful lot of what’s going on, or what is going to happen. Now, JR tell us, your real name isn’t Chuck, Greg, or Peg is it? LOL

If our Commissioners would avoid putting themselves into these situations with conflicts of interest, nepotism, closed door influence peddling, etc. (not just Dixon), these discussions would not be necessary at all. Ask yourself why this “important” decision was “not” on the meeting agenda? Therein lies your answer.
