Dixon cries foul over softball payments
It appears that not even the great American pastime is safe as Butler County leaders leave no rock unturned in trying to fill a $6 million budget hole.
Commission President Donald Dixon took issue Thursday evening, July 2, with a request that county employees be reimbursed for umpire fees and registration for the county’s recreational softball team. Price tag: $229.
“We’re taking money out of the general fund? We’re laying people off, we’re freezing salaries, and we’re joining a softball league?” an incredulous Dixon asked.
The reimbursement was for a game scheduled for Thursday night. “Tell them before they play because they might not want to go,” he said. “I just don’t think it’s appropriate.”
Commissoiner Gregory Jolivette said he was inclined to agree with Dixon’s foul call, but wanted more information about the reimbursement before voting the team out.
Without a second to Dixon’s request to deny the payment, the issue took a rain check until another meeting.

I agree with Mr. Dixon. How stupid can the county be? Wake up Mr. Jollivette and smell the coffee!

Can’t the employees pay for this out of their own pockets? $229 amongst 10 participants???

How stupid this county is, kinda looks like the cities of Middletown and Monroe, oops I should have put the city of Monroe and that school district first on that list.

If the county as a whole does not benefit from the expenditure then it should always fall upon the player’s shoulders to pay the fees. I’m wondering why it has been paid for from my tax dollars in the past.

Dixon is gagging on a Nat and swallowing an Elephant. It’s $229.00, now much as the Board of Elections has spent on travel and food for its employees this year.

Is little Donnie mad because he didn’t make the team?

Good work Don, you only need to cut $5,999,771.00 more waste to get us out of the mess you got us into. I’m afraid your’e going to have to cut Robin, Betty and Rick to get that much money.

Walt, Pete & Melinda: You sound like a bunch of sniffling, cry baby County Employees to me. YOU DON’T GET IT! DIXON IS RIGHT, it is not the mere $229., it is the message it sends, like “well $229. isn’t that much” (and) “well $2,000. isn’t that much.” That kind of thinking is what has put the County’s finances in the toilet! From what I read Dixon is the only Commissioner that who trying to lead by example (such as this) and that is “NO SPENDING UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.” If you three want to play softball, have the County Employees on the team pay just under $23.00 a piece and be grateful you are employed!

I agree with Fed Up Joe. It is obvious you three work for the County and it would not surprise anyone if you all three (Walt,Pete & Melinda)are probably the same person! To get you to cry so loud, over so little, Dixon must be doing something right! Your problem is you have been freely slopping at the trough whenever you want. Keep up the good work Commissioner Dixon! Only let the pigs in the trough when it is a must!!!

I am a County employee of over 20+ years and I do know what I am talking about when it comes to the way the Commissioners have spent us right into bankruptcy. But Melinda, you can’t blame that on Dixon. He has only been on the Commission for just under two years. If he had not come on when he did the State would be in here right now running a bankrupt county. Before Dixon, I watched as family member after family member was hired and their salaries go thru the roof. Surely we all remember Furmon’s son-in-law going from $18,000. a year to almost $90,000. in less than six years! And that is only one example. Oh, and I think every friend Furmon’s son graduated with also works for the County. It goes on and on. It has been a sinful! At least Dixon has the guts and honesty to fight “city hall.” You may not like him because he’s got your number, but the voters love him!!!! AND so do a lot of County employees who have watched these outrageous (and bordering on criminal behavior) go on for years.

How convenient that Petty Officer Furmon remains “MUM” on the spending of $229.00 but will chase someone and potentially cause a loss of life over a .50 newspaper. Chuck doesn’t have enough fingers and toes to count to $229.00. Even if he calls on Peg and Lynn Kinkaid, he still does not have enough extemeties to count that high!

You really want to know how much the BOE spends on it’s employees, well I have a family member who works there and I’ll tell you, damned little, to the tune in fact that during this past election working 90 hour weeks, week after week and month after month the employees forfeited their overtime pay, not only that, but only took pay for 40 hour weeks and were happy to do it, and have not complained once about it, and this includes management.

And to finish, this was approved by Don Dixon, Chuck Furmon and Greg Jolivett, and was approved long before you whiners got in here and tried to bash these folks and turn the public against them. It was called foresight. And due to the current economic crisis they will be doing it again in the upcoming election. Including the management. Betty leads by example.

So to sum up in this pathetic weak as water news paper, Lynn and Betty spent enormous sums of their money, out of pocket expenses to take care of these ladies who do a job that I doubt 2% of us can handle and make life as bearable as possible, also approved, so lay off my Commissioners and County Leaders

You are giving way toooooooooooo much credit to Lynn…..he is functionally illerate. Betty carries the weight and Lynn cuts wedding, funeral anniversary announcements and talks (gossips) on the phone all day, plans where he is eating.

That’s right Smitty, I’d like to see you fill those shoes for about 30 days, you wouldn’t make it two weeks without caving in and crying like the baby you are, and if we had more leaders like Judy in this county we would be in pretty good shpe

Jim,If you are going to state your 20+ years at the county as some sort of credibility you may want to get your facts correct. First of all, I am not Mr. Furmon’s son-in-law. I have been his ex son-in-law since Febuary 2002. Secondly, I did not start at 18,000 a year. I started in July of 1996, before Mr. Furmon was elected, and that number reflects one half of a yearly salary. I guess you got these “facts” from the Journal News who continue to allow this incorrect information to represent their truth. Finally, the time frame you state as fact is off by 6 years. I was employed by Butler County for 12 years. I worked very hard to raise to the level I achieved with BCEMA and greatly appreciated the opportunity to serve the people of Butler County. Since leaving I have done quite well and am currently working as a consultant for Homeland Security. I continue to read comments from people like you who assume to know the facts and the Journal News and Josh allow your misrepresentation of the truth to pass as fact. To all that read the Journal News, please don’t assume what is represented as the truth by these “experts” has any validity nor that the Journal News makes any attempt to verify the facts within.

Sorry to those that think Don Dixon is the answer. If you’ll think back we did not face the problems of a $6 million dollar budget deficit, one department head after another leaving county government, and morale of those working for the county in the crapper, UNTIL Don Dixon was elevated from democrat, to republican and then to county commissioner. The other two commissioners need to wake up and put Donnie in his place.

Dear “C’Mon:(or Mr. Hamlin) yeah right! That is why your salaries skyrocketed when you married into the “Furmon Family” and it is being investigated…let’s all stay tuned to this outcome.
