Children Services traditional marriage preference update

A Liberty Twp. resident this morning assailed a controversial, proposed Butler County Children Services policy that gives preference in foster care and adoption cases to traditional married couples over single, unmarried or same-sex households (more on the policy here).

In addition to handing over a 476-signature petition opposed to the policy, Carla Brittain made the following prepared statement:

This follows another petition handed over last week by a supporter of the policy. Read about that here.

What do you think of the proposed policy?

I am reassured that at least some people are concerned about the best interest of the children. I am FULLY in support of all children going to loving, caring homes, regardless of the sexual orientation of the parents. Bravo!

The elected officials in this county are a disgrace. Two homophobes on the county commission and a racist for a sheriff.

Thank you to Mike Fox, the County Commissioners, and those CCV Wackos for making Butler Co. the biggest joke in SW Ohio once again.

By Fox was wrong, Jones is not.

Enacting Fox’s change is clearly wrong. Calling the sheriff a racist because he enforces laws against illegal aliens is wrong too. Yet, Molly is apparently okay with making such a specious claim. Using her logic I guess one could say that makes her an accessory to the crimes many commit, and therefore she could be considered a criminal herself. If she helps any stay here illegally, she actually is. Bet she’ll love more of Mexico’s crimes spilling across our borders into Hamilton even more.

It’s not about one’s nationality Juan…it’s about illegal alien’s presence and impact. Yet, you and countless others routinely denigrate and/or call a majority of this population racist because they disagree with your view. Please, intelligent people know why that tactic is being used…there is no real defense. Given that, no one should be surprised by how low you and others are willing to go. And, its cries just like yours and Molly’s, and dumb moves like Fox, that continue to make this county look like a bunch of bumpkins.

Let’s stick to facts. If your issue is with the “presence” of illegal aliens, then what you are decrying is a misdemeanor offense of entering the country in between border posts. That wouldn’t seem to be the biggest problem facing Butler County law enforcement. If your problem is the “impact” these individuals have, specifically with respect to law and law enforcement - please, then let’s have that debate. The national statistics that exist are crystal clear. The incidence of illegal aliens present in the country DOUBLED between 1994 and 2005. And the crime rate? Well, it FELL 34% in the same time period. Is that the law enforcement impact you refer to, declining crime rates? There is ample evidence to support a few notions you won’t like. For example, illegal immigrants are LESS likely to commit midemeanor or felony offenses than the general population. Also, illegal immigrants are more likely to be the victims of crimes that they do not report to the police for fear of reprisal. What exactly are the presence and impact issues you protest so much - I’m afraid I don’t understand, being a bumpkin and all.

More playbook tactics…downgrade the “offenses,” move the discussion “ball”. Look, entering the country illegally is one thing, acts to stay in this country; i.e. identity theft, unlicensed/uninsured motor vehicle operation, falsification of records, tax fraud, use of services, etc., is entirely another and that’s what concerns a majority of U.S. citizens. But, “sticking to the facts”, please recall that my issue revolves around what people will say and/or do in attempts to make their point, and how that reflects poorly on our area, and especially on Jones who’s doing his job. Juan’s xenophobe comment and others like it, proved it. Your comments, while far from a bumpkins’ knowledge, may be worse as you disingenuously attempt to ignore their indefensible acts, and those of their “sponsors, entirely. At least that’s one negative trait that’s not exclusive to this county.

If it’s not xenophobia, what is it? The sheriff has taken the time and trouble to document to no less than the President his concerns surrounding “Mexico”. In his letter, he exhibits a stunning lack of sophistication in his understanding of the problem. So much so that I think one might reasonably believe a “rube” or dare I say, a bumpkin, was the author. The sheriff poses next to a sign directing illegals straight to the county jail. What is he doing to investigate the flow of unregistered guns out of Butler county? Does he know if they’re a problem? Does he know how many, how frequently? Does he know where they’re going? How about curtailing Butler county’s illicit drug appetite? Where is his zeal there? Those are both real and immediate things he can do that will be more effectual in keeping Mexican nationals from fleeing drug fueled violence and seeking a more bucolic and peaceful existence in Butler county. But the fact is he evidently doesn’t know or care. At least he doesn’t write letters to the President and pose next to signs that say “Weed Smokers Report Here”. Because to his perception, that has nothing to do with those Spanish speaking brown people popping up in Monroe and Fairfield and Darrtown. Indefensible acts? A class C misdemeanor. That’s what entering the country illegally is. A traffic ticket. Sure, they’re “freeloading” on all the high quality county services like water and sewer and all. Look - I’ll bet you an illegal laborer is paying as much as anybody else in usage and excise taxes with every good or service they buy. If ID theft is rampant in Butler county, it’s sure not being reported to the FTC. Whose failure would that be - maybe the guy who you say is “just doing his job”? This is a serious issue - and it will require more thoughtful and thorough solutions than “throw all the brown Spanish speakers out of the county”. Why doesn’t the good sheriff engage county leadership and the citizenry in a forum on immigration reform, where we find a way to get these individuals documented, on a track to resident alien status, and stop demonizing them as the a priori problem in the county? And the only reason I can imagine is that he doesn’t want to. He’d rather round ‘em up and throw ‘em out. Even the ones working hard at low wage. Why? I think xenophobia is a more than plausible possibility.

You’ve finally exposed your real difference with Jones and a plurality of U.S. citizens…they disagree with your real goal, amnesty. Funny how you complain about illegal aliens being allegedly and unfarily demonized (forget the last two days of local headlines I guess), yet you and others are absolutely doing that to Jones and anyone else who appears to disagree. At a minimum, that makes you a hypocrite. Your words and your continued attempts to move the ball off their larger offences, and the societal costs this brings, suggests something worse as there is no defense.

You sure love putting words in the mouths of others. Who said anything about amnesty? What I said was let’s figure out an intelligent solution. Resident alien status is NOT amnesty. It’s not even citizenship. I suspect from your comments you’d love to pigeon hole anybody with an original thought into an idealogical corner, a la Limbaugh and his ilk. News flash - there is no “playbook” I’m working from anyway. It’s called critical thinking. It’s called expression. Sorry you don’t like it. As for the news, on the contrary, I think the last two days of local headlines are the exceptions that prove the rule. What was yesterdays? Drugs and guns? Hhmmm - where have we heard that before?
