Piper may be weighing run for appeals court

Speculation is circling through Republican ranks about whether Butler County Prosecutor Robin Piper will make a run for 12th District Court of Appeals next year.

Piper spoke to members of the party’s roughly 250 member executive committee Tuesday night at Tori’s Station in Fairfield.

Attendees say he spoke after Warren County Prosecutor Rachel Hutzel, who has announced she is weighing a run for the appeals court.

While Piper didn’t formally announce he would run, “he said that he has been going around to the different Lincoln Days in the different counties,” said Butler County Commissioner Gregory Jolivette, who was present as a member of the party’s central committee.

The court of appeals hears cases from eight counties — Brown, Butler, Clermont, Clinton, Fayette, Madison, Preble and Warren — and each county has a local party with a Lincoln Day fund-raiser where the party elite rub elbows and raise money for local races.

“I think it was obvious that he is thinking about it,” Jolivette said. “He’s made that known.”

Piper himself wouldn’t commit, though he did confirm that he spoke at the meeting.

“I cannot comment on that at this time,” Piper said. “It’s way to early in the process.”

“I have not made any declarations of my candidacy at this time,” Piper said. “There is a lot of hearsay and gossip out there.”

Two seats will come open on the court of appeals next year, when Judges William Young and H.J. Bressler become too old to sit on the bench.

I take exception to Mr.Sweigarts statement that the present Appeals Court judges Young and Bressler have become to old to sit on the bench. The fact that the law limits them from serving because of age does not make them to old to serve! It’s time younger people have some respect for those older than them.

It takes wisdom and good judgement to sit on the bench not necessarily youth.

As soon as I realized this article wasn’t about Rowdy Roddy Piper, I lost interest. RRP would’ve made you win a steel cage match to prove your innocence, which is a big improvement over how things are run now.

I want to see Bruce Carter run again for the 12th District. Bruce is man of integrity and vision and would be an asset to this court.

Integrity and vision is precisely what this court lacks. It lards on parol evidence by the bucket and approves of f Ohio AG attacks in private probate matters.
