The writing on the wall
While at a Butler County commission workshop Thursday in the commissioners’ office conference room — they discussed changes to a HUD grant, among other things — I noticed some odd hieroglyphs on the marker board taking up one wall.
It appeared to be notes from a recent, closed door budget meeting. I don’t pretend to have any idea what they mean, but I wrote them down to pass along to you (take from it what you will, and let me know if you have any interpretation).
Here are some of the notes:
- Dept - not complying - reduce their budgets to the 2008 levels (08ers)
- Sheriff not cut proportionally with other departments
- If another cut is required in 2009, then the 08ers and sheriff should bear the reduction proportionately
- 2010 - dept reluctant to cut because everyone does not shoulder responsibility
- Prepare Co = 2010 will call for no more than 2009 - announce mid year
- This is the day of budget reckoning
There was more, but this is all I got. I was also trying to take notes from the meeting before they went into executive session. Any codebreakers out there?

I can break the code: Sheriff, the party on Hanover Street is over, join the real world.

Here’s the problem, the sheriff always submits a low ball budget. He makes it sound like he is cutting his budget but them about mid year he’s back before the commissioners demanding twice the amount he cut from the budget he submitted at the start of the year and warning if he dosen’t get what he wants criminals will be terrorizing the citizens. It will be interesting to see if Mr. Dixon makes his good friend and political ally live on the budget he submitted.

Speaking of the sheriff what’s up with the county radio system? The tax payers gave the county $37 million dollars and the system was to be in operation last fall and it’s still not up and running. Maybe someone should check the books and see where all that money has actually gone, I’d bet a good chunk has been spent on salaries for some good old boys.
