Turner on his replacement

UPDATE: I have updated the EMA executive board list below. George Lang is not on the executive board (he is vice chairman of the advisory committee), and Hamilton Police Chief Neil Ferdelman is.

Butler County Emergency Management Director William Turner made a few interesting comments at the meeting last night where the EMA board discussed replacing him.

The first had to do with picking Middletown City Councilman Bill Becker as EMA director. Turner pointed out that there could be the perception of a conflict when Middletown gets a new truck from EMA soon.

“I guarantee some of the jurisdictions of the county is going to say, ‘Aha! Look where the money is going,’” Turner said.

Later, Liberty Twp. Trustee Patrick Hiltman suggested the board hire Turner back on a contractual basis until a new director is found. Responded Turner:

“I think one of the county commissioners would have a coronary and die.”

Who do you think should replace Turner? Becker?

On a related note, here is the new EMA executive committee appointed last night:

  • Mark Sutton (chairman), Fairfield Twp. trustee
  • Neil Ferdelman, Hamilton police chief
  • Tim Miller, Reily Twp. trustee
  • Raymond Wurzelbacher, Ross Twp. trustee
  • Lawrence Mulligan, Middletown mayor
  • Gary Salmon, Oxford Twp. trustee
  • Alan Daniel, Madison Twp. trustee
  • Steve Botts, Middletown fire chief
  • Len Endress, former Oxford fire chief
  • Ron D’Epifanio, Fairfield mayor
  • Paul Gillespie, Milford Twp. trustee
  • Patrick Hiltman, Liberty Twp. trustee
  • Charles Furmon, Butler County commissioner

A who’s who of the Republican Party. Does anyone else see a trend here?

I had a friend who attended that meeting who tells me Turner had letters from the State Attorney General to backup what he caution on conflict of interest. It sounds to me like Turner wanted to do things by the books and the politicians wanted to just do it their way. I don’t recall ever hearing of Turner or EMA having legal issues or conflicts of interest issues during his time with that department.
