Cuts bring changes to sheriff’s office
From reporter Lauren Pack:
Because of budget cuts, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office has made a number of changes, including restructuring and job cuts.
These moves — coupled with job reduction in the minimum security jail contracted through Resolutions Community Solutions and the elimination of $500,000 from the budget of the new radio system to come online this year — will save the county about $1.4 million, Sheriff Richard K. Jones said.
Three jobs have been eliminated and pink slips handed out to the crime prevention officer (a part-time position) and two officers assigned to the child support enforcement division. Meanwhile, the number of employees in the information technology division has been decreased from three to two, according to Jones.
In addition, the Drug Abuse Resistance Education officer has been reassigned to general duties.
In the next two weeks, street patrol deputies will move from eight-hour shifts to 12-hour shifts, which administrators believe will decrease sick days. It also will provide better, more consistent street patrol coverage, according to Jones. And, he said, overtime pay of time and a half will also be replaced with regular wages for hours worked over an eight-hour shift.
Jones said he is now looking to 2010 with the economic crunch expected to continue. More cuts will come if needed to balance the budget, he said.
Fraternal Order of Police President Brett Castell said any time there’s change, people are apprehensive, but most are excited about the change to 12-hour shifts.
“The time off is better and there is more manpower each shift,” Castell said.
He added the administration has been working with the union to save money.
“They are not just cramming it down our throats,” Castell said.
Here is another story Lauren did on how the cuts will affect the sheriff’s office spokesman.
