More on county layoffs
I’ve written several stories in the past 24 hours about Butler County commissioners bringing the axe down on two dozen county workers, balancing their budget and promising water rate reductions.
Here they are:
- This story is an overview of how many jobs were cut and commissioners’ justification.
- Here, we meet some of the employees soon to be out of a job, and give more info on closure of the Soldiers, Sailors and Pioneers Monument in Hamilton.
- This is an overview of the water rate reductions, how they compare to what was proposed last year and more on staff cuts at the water department.
- The county’s unions do not appear to be gearing up for a fight, as we report here.
After reading, come back here and share your thoughts on any of these issues.

It only takes one Commissioner to turn out the lights. Does that give you any ideas about how to save money, especially in the Commissioner’s office?

Sorry, but eliminating two of the three positions would generate miniscule savings. And, given the characters that this county historically elects we’d likely be in far worse shape as I could only imagine what would happen if people like Fox were calling all the shots. Now, if you’d like to take a more macro view into how many administrators and support staff it takes to deliver this county’s services, then you’d be onto something as the county would save a lot by running all entities as one and/or by merging services with other external governmental entities.
