This just in from Ohio State:

June 21, 2010

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Duron Carter and Keith Wells will not be part of the Ohio State football team for the 2010 season, head coach Jim Tressel announced today.

Carter, a wide receiver from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., caught 13 passes for 176 yards as a freshman last season. Wells, a defensive end from Gainesville, Ga., who redshirted the 2009 campaign, saw limited action for the Buckeyes as a freshman in 2008.

The Buckeyes will report for 2010 preseason camp on Thursday, August 5.

Carter was ruled academically ineligible after the Fall quarter that is why he didn’t play in the bowl game. His grades didn’t improve so he didn’t participate at all in Spring practice. So he is transferring to Coffeyville Community College in Kansas. There is a chance if he gets his grades back in order that he could end up back in Columbus after a year. As for Wells he is transferring because he is pretty far down on the depth chart and probably won’t get much PT. So neither of them were actually kicked off the team.

Can’t anyone left at the DDN write an accurate headline??

Mark Twain once said (I sumamrize), when a reporter writes a article he can chose to painstakingly investigate and verify his facts, or report on whatever he heard… both pay the same.

I always thought that college was to increase your academic knowledge & expertise ??? I think all draftees into the ‘college arena’ - football & basketball etc - should take & pass academic tests before the college goes to the expense of promoting their ‘star’. ARGH

Wow. Academically Ineligible! They do have to take academic tests to become eligible to play at the college level. As a matter of fact, they have to pass their OGT to just graduate. ACT and SAT scores are entrance scores to colleges. If they do not meet certain requirements they are Prop 48 - and sit out an entire year.

The reward that athletes get to go play college football for free needs to be renamed something other than ‘scholarship’. Most of these clowns don’t possess average intelligance. I’m not sure what you call it, but quit insulting kids who actually work hard in school, get good grades and who will contribute something worthwhile to society. No such thing as an athletic ‘scholarship’.

Send them to Florida. The Gators can use more talent like that.

DO NOT READ DDN’S COVERAGE OF OSU! GO TO buckeyextra.com offered by the Columbus Dispatch. Brian Kollars is an irresponsible hack. Zero players have been “kicked off” OSU’s team….dumb a—!!!

To Academically inellgible, They don’t draft college players! Take the time to know what you are talking about before commenting.

How about we drop the pretense of “college student-athletes”, let the colleges pay the players (ever see the Marx Brothers flick “Horsefeathers”? This is not a new concept!), forget about them attending classes, choosing a major, faking an eligible GPA and all that crap, and run it as a business, a public relations arm of the college that may or may not turn a profit if run properly. That would qualify as more intellectual honesty than most universities can muster at this point.

Why bash the “student” and call them knuckleheads, or clowns, or dummies? They were offered a full scholarship to play a game with a chance to become millionaires if they make it to the pros. YOU buy the jerseys, YOU buy the tickets, etc. Who’s the dummy? Also, for every Carter, there’s a Krenzel…not to mention all the student-athletes in sports where there is no pro level. They ARE student athletes…and I’m betting you never bought one of their jerseys or attended one of their games!!

@ buck fan, Not that I’m trying to defend BK because I do agree with your statement, But I didn’t see where he said anybody was kicked off the team.

Dr. Zap, you are officially banned from criticizing anyone’s “intelligance” again until you learn to correctly spell the word intelligence. Until that time we will continue to refer to it as an athletic scholarship. Thanks and have a good day
