Jim Tressel is “nearly hopeless”: A summary in 2,386 words

There’s a man named Chris Brown, and he’s a blogger with Yahoo! Sports covering college football.

On Monday, following the weekend of action, Brown put together a lengthy and involved analysis of the Ohio State-USC game, and one of his conclusions is this:

I’m convinced the situation in Columbus is nearly hopeless

A strong statement, but Brown has the photos and breakdowns to back up the way he feels. But beware, Buckeyes fans. The 2,386 words will not be pleasant for you, and reading will be even less pleasant if you believe in Jim Tressel.

A defining sentence, summing up the angst held by many Ohio State fans:

For all the talk of Tressel’s buttoned-down, conservative approach, and how his teams don’t make mistakes, the most basic and fundamental errors permeated throughout Ohio State’s offensive plan like cancer in its late stages, and the only conclusion I could draw from this game is that Tressel — whatever he may be as a motivator, a recruiter, a teacher of technique or as a disciplinarian — is not up to the challenge of leading his team past others that equal his in talent.

It’s a very interesting and researched piece, but it’s not going to make you feel any better about the game, despite the close score.

I would argue that the flaw in his argument is his idea that Ohio State is losing to teams that are equal in talent. I don’t think they are. I think they are losing to teams with superior talent. That’s a different problem. I’d rather lose to only teams with superior talent than what Ohio State did in the past when they would lose to inferior talent. During the Cooper years, there were multiple times in which Ohio State was far more talented and far less successful than the teams that Tressel has put out there. I wouldn’t trade what we have now for that. Also, I think Ohio State should be commended for scheduling these big games every year. I know that they are 1-3 in these games, but I’d rather watch these games against Texas and USC than watch them play Troy or Appalachian State. And, if we remember, they’d be 3-1 in those games if Hartsock caught an easy pass against Texas or if the kid on Saturday hadn’t whiffed on blocking that punt.

The OSU players played their hearts out again USC, the coaching staff loss this game. They called about seven or eight bad plays. OSU needs to become more aggressive, stop playing it safe and get better making adjustment during the game. If they do this I don’t think they will loss no more this season nor next year’s season.

I have to agree with Waymon! The coach’s especially Tressel played the game too safe. USC went for it on 4th down almost every time. When we were on the 1 yard line and it was 4th and 1 we should have gone for it instead we got 3 points. We could have had 7! Our QB is just as big as theirs and we didn’t even try!! Tressel plays safe ball not football. STOP PLAYING THAT WAY and maybe we will win a game against a top ranked team. Not playing more agressive tells me that the coach’s don’t have a lot of confidence in our team.

I am not an OSU fan, but Tressel deserves a break. Tressel is not overly conservative. He is overly predictable. I think Tressel is an excellent coach, but his style is his style, and he will keep the buckeyes in the hunt for years to come. Buckeye fans you could be like me, wishing our coach (Charlie Weis)would have been more conservative on Saturday! Relax, OSU will stay in the hunt, and they will get another chance to win a big game this year against a national power, they might even get another shot at USC.

Hey morons step back from the ledge and try thinking like an adult, tak Tressel’s entire body of work and not just a few hand picked games, idiots.

Hey silverback what is the common denominator in these losses. All to top programs. TRESSEL, maybe he should bench pryor like he did Boeckman. Karma what goes around comes around. Jim it is coming can you feel it. You need to remember to take care of the student athletes that sacrifice all they have for you, instead of being tossed aside like a used rubber. Bucks have the talent so comments on the lack there of are crazy. The main reason Tressel is still there is his record against the floundering team up north. I hate to say it but I bet that ends this year. I sure hope I am wrong. Time will tell.

I just don’t understand why the coaching staff stops using weapons like Brandon Saine, J.Posey, or the running game. TP only ran when he had to. LSU, Texas, USC, Fla Gators, to name teams that have played the full 60 minutes and go on 4th & 1, all have defeated us. You’d think we would have learned a thing or two. I am a Buckeye forever, just not as a hyped Buckeye fan as in the past. Like my dear Father used to tell me; “Son, hope for the best, but expect the worst”. For the past 4 seasons, expecting the worst has kept me from jumping face first off a curb. Don’t worry, I would never harm myself, just very uneasy about how the pay (coaching staff) doesn’t add up for the product lately.

Jim Tressel is a great coach, but he has absolutely no business calling any offensive plays. His division II offense will never win against the elite teams. His coaching is fine for the pathethic big ten conference, but thats it. With all of the players that O State has put in the NFL, you can’t tell me that we can’t play with the elite teams. Field position, field goals. What HS all american would want to play in that kind of offense. Its time to bring in a real offensive mind. Tressel has no business calling plays.

OSU coaches need to watch game film of Vince Young at Texas during his senior year. Start calling plays that will allow Pryor to become the next Vince - then you’ll see the Bukcs back on top.

Not to pick on Silverback, but his statement has a fatal flaw. If you look at Tressel’s body of work you see a season of well played, well discilined football. But when its crunch time as in USC, Texas, or a Bowl game, his offensive strategy is soooo conservative. He needs to learn to dance with the one that brought him or stick to the same formula that got him there. Its more playing not to lose instead of playing to win.
