Tressel, Ringer together again … on the field
The best storyline in the Big Ten this week is Ohio State vs. Javon Ringer (and Michigan State). It took a matter of seconds for reporters to zero-in on the topic during today’s Big Ten teleconference.
“Ringer is a special guy; he lifts the entire football team,” OSU coach Jim Tressel said, adding that the first thing you notice about Ringer is his exceptional character.
“He lights up a room when he walks into it; he lights up a huddle when he walks into it,” Tressel said.
Of course, when Ringer was a star at Chaminade-Julienne High School, it was no secret that Ohio State wanted him … bad. Ringer was a great kid but wasn’t the greatest student, and OSU was getting a little tougher on admissions while licking its wounds after the Maurice Clarett PR debacle.
Tressel pushed hard for Ringer, and there were reports that he took his case to OSU President Karen Holbrook. Tressel denied it today.
“I’m not sure that’s exactly accurate, no,” Tressel responded when asked if he went to the top. “We definitely wanted him to come, but it didn’t work out.”
We’ll see how it works out on the field for Ringer on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (ABC).
INJURY UPDATES: Tressel said that OSU backup running back Dan Herron will play Saturday at Michigan State. Herron missed last week’s game with a concussion.
Other injury news:
— Tight end Rory Nicol and backup linebacker Austin Spitler will play at MSU.
— Backup wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher returns after suffering a concussion at Wisconsin.
— Defensive end Lawrence Wilson, who was injured during the Purdue game, is out.

Hope Coach Tressel gives Jake Ballard from Springboro a pacifier and tell him yes he was completely open on that pass Terrelle ran in from the one yard line against Minnesota. Todd who???? Springboro isn’t that close to St. Henry….By Tim

That’s why our offense is in ruts now and its obvious TP feels uncomfortable with upperclassmen not embracing change for now and the future. No wonder TP was paying a lil more attention to 6-6 250 TE recruit Ra’Shede Hageman this past weekend… Smart kid, with the 6-8 251 Reid Fragel coming in next year maybe Jake should be a lil more weary of who’s buttering his bread….By Jim Staley

It sounds like CJ may have been just awarded another National School of Excellence award - what a fraud.By charles

How crazy is the DDN that they write nothing about Javon’s success but yet dwell on how OSU could’ve had Javon. Why not make the the Columbus Daily News with as much as they care about the overrated Buckeyes. I’m a pround CJ grad and am happy Ringer went somewhere besides OSU. As we can see MSU worked out a lot better for Javon. How about we focus on what Javon is doing rather than him picking one of the other 118 schools in college football?By jimmie

Obviously, Ringer is much better off at a prestigeous school like MSU than he would have been at tosu.By Andy

No mention of how Ringer is doing in the classroom. Or is he even going to class? He made it through C-J but was unable to get admission in to OSU? Sounds like C-J needs to do some work on their prep program.By Rick

I have to agree… the DDN sure is dwelling on the “what could have been”. Its plain and simple…if Ringer would have held an academic standard in high school he would have been at OSU. I agree with Jim and Andy…to come from a National School of Excellence that praises itself on academics, why couldn’t Ringer even get into OSU?…oh thats right…OSU admission requirements are at a higher standard than MSU.By Lee

It’s been how many years now and still talking about Ringer being a buckeye? Talk about desperation for a storyline.By Charles

speaking about all of this talk about why couldn’t he get into OSU since he graduated from CJ… I’m shocked he couldn’t get into OSU.. OSU is near the bottom in academics in the Big 10By Matt

OSU is actually hard to get into now… I just graduated high school in ‘08 and I have some friends that got denied with above a 3.3. They really have stepped up who they let in now.
