Buckeyes ‘pass’ first Big Ten test, but it’s no A+
If you’re an Ohio State football fan, you probably haven’t had that “MAN, WAS THAT GREAT!” feeling after a Buckeyes game this season. Could’ve had it Saturday, but the Buckeyes defense fell asleep in the fourth quarter and OSU settled for a 34-21 victory against a so-so Minnesota team.
Jim Tressel certainly didn’t do cartwheels after singing Carmen Ohio. He wants a balanced offense, and right now OSU isn’t much of a threat through the air. Terrelle Pryor might someday remind us all of Dan Marino, but he’s got some work to do.
Tressel asked in his postgame press conference how many times the Buckeyes threw the ball. Somebody glanced at the stat sheet.
“Thirteen times? Is that all we threw?” Tressel asked in amazement. “Oh, man.”
Well, Pryor threw 13 times. Completed eight for 70 yards and a touchdown. Backup Todd Boeckman was 5-for-9 for 65 yards and a TD.
Minnesota coach Tim Brewster compared Pryor to Vince Young (Pryor doesn’t like that), and the freshman looks like more of a runner than thrower. He ran for 97 yards.
“I hope we throw it more effectively down the road,” Tressel said. “It didn’t feel like we threw and caught and protected as well as we’ll have to.
“I envision us being a balanced team. Whoever we need to use to do that, we will.”
Mmm. Boeckman looked better throwing Saturday. Does that mean … nah, there’s no QB controversy. But Boeckman better be ready next week at Wisconsin. The way Pryor holds on to the ball and dances around the pocket, he’s liable to get squished like a piece of cheese by the Badgers defense.
Meanwhile, Beanie Wells got back on the field and looked good, except for that early fumble. He finished with 106 yards rushing on 14 carries.
“I felt like a freshman again,” Wells said. “I was nervous the whole day.”
Considering how angry Wisconsin will be after choking against Michigan, OSU fans will be nervous all week.

I liked the flavor of todays game: I liked the way Tressel didnt overplay Beanie, and used both QBs. At times the D- sleepwalks, and that concerns me. As far as Wisconsin, they’re making it a much closer game than there’s any right to versus Michigan…Next week should be a good test, and an indicator of the season as a whole.By jimmy

Is it possible that Tressel is not the coahing god eveyone thinks he is? I am a big Buckeye fan, but under Tressel, OSU’s reputation has never been lower among non OSU fans. The 2 national championship blow outs, and the USC game define this program, however unfairly. Having a good winning percentage in the weak Big 10 does not impress anybody, and the high profile embarrasments are what people remember.By Tim

The Pryor and Wells combo will wreak havoc all year. Comparing Pryor to Vince Young is completely unwise. Great job to whoever’s coaching Pryor up for gameday because his ability to read defenses and throw completely complements his god given ability to run. Pryor would have way more passing yards if the new rules did’nt affect the clock. Hope the alumni, coaches, or a mentor will not let early success side track his humility.By Florida Buckeye

Tressel not a good big game coach?!? Interesting: All the national championships, before OSU and the ONE of Three Tries since coming here; all the wins against Michigan; and the bowls wins in non BCS bowls…I would remind people of Cooper’s HORRIBLE record in Bowls AND against Michigan…People hate a program that wins; and, in part, it is a compliment to be hated by others in NCAA Football…Even in a down year, OSU is a good football program, and the Vest is a great coach!By SEC1

YEAAAA! We beat Minnesota..who’s next, Wisconsin? They were very impressive at the little house yesterday! Looks like that old coot Paterno may be the only large dog in the little 10 this year. Any of ya’ll see Bama on the TV last night. Georgia found out it’s tough at the top of the SEC, the closest product to the NFL on the planet…By jimmy

Slow down Randy…we’d have to be the ONLY one lost team, and everyone else have two losses before the BCS is gonna allow us to the dance again…My hopes: Beat Wisconsin, Penn State, Michigan, Win the Big 10, Win the Rose Bowl. It’s a long road…By Tim

I believe randy, it’s going to be a crazy year leaving buckeye haters screaming playoffs once again because they’re not handling business like osu does in their conference. I just hope the bucks win with style points all season to leave no doubts due to the usc loss.
