Buckeyes must regroup for Big Ten run

Cleaning up some loose ends from Saturday night’s not-so special performance by THE Ohio State Buckeyes:

— My first question after the game: When was the last time the Buckeyes were held without a touchdown? The answer: Nov. 23,1996, in a 13-9 loss to Michigan. The TD streak was snapped at 141 games.

— I’ve never seen Jim Tressel visibly upset and rattled. He was both in the first half as USC all but delivered a technical knockout by halftime. And Tressel’s speed isn’t what it used to be. I mean, how do you get run down from behind by Erin Andrews? That was one uncomfortable halftime interview.

— The Buckeyes can forget about a national championship after being hammered 35-3. Heck, winning the Big Ten will be a supreme challenge. Suddenly, road games against Wisconsin (Oct. 4), Michigan State (Oct. 18) and Illinois (Nov. 15) look tough, as does a home date against Penn State (Oct. 25).

— Terrelle Pryor? Why not? He’s not Joe Montana, but he can avoid the rush. Todd Boeckman never had a chance.

— “Buckeye Football Weekly with Jim Tressel” airs tonight at 6 on the Big Ten Network. If you have power by then, that might be worth checking out.

If Tressel/OSU football want to make any headway playing better against the USC’s and the SEC, he needs to dump the slow, panic in a clutch, low skill Krenzel/Boeckman type quarterbacks in favor of the more active “Tebow”type. OSU has a potential of two more losses-Penn State, Wisconsin. Hopefully not.Michigan looks weak this year.Pryor-too predictable. Him running is guaranteed.Leaves the pocket too soon.Forgets he has running backs to hand off to.Panics.Defense is not fooled at all when he’s in there.Tressel is not as innovative as Pete Carroll or Urban Myer on the offensive side.OSU/Big Ten still have a long way to go and another level to achieve where the LSU’s, USC’s and Florida’s reside.

OSU and the little 10 coaches need a round table discussion on a pathway for improvement. Playing teams like Youngstown, OU, Rets Tech etc does not properly prepare them to play teams outside the little 10. We fans are sick and tired of being the laughing stock of the rest of the country. OSU looked like a Junior Varsity Saturday night. Is time for the vest to quit being so conservative and predictable? A change is needed quick!

Krenzel wasn’t the panicky type. Boeckman is. I’d settle for a Craig Krenzel right now. Hell, I’d settle for ANYONE right now!

I don’t care who the QB is, with a line that can’t or won’t block nobody would have time. The worst move now would be to put in Prior, an inexperienced QB, who can not read a defense. Short term memory loss about the QB who led OSU to the national championship game. The coach cost OSU the game by not letting boeckman get his timing down. Forget about the two qb system. It won’t work, OSU is not Florida and Prior is no Tebow, Yet.

It used to be “The Game” OSU vs Michigan..now that we have their number, we can’t win the big games…we get blown away..I’ve never liked the way we play Div II or teams that are an easy win. Now its come back to bite us. If you play weak teams it doesn’t help us at all when we play great teams. Sorry to say this, but this is going to be a terrible season…no more Tressel ball! Throw away that playbook..get Pryor in there with a healthy Beanie, then maybe we can get it together. Signed, one very unhappy Buckeye…

The problems with this team start and stop with Todd Boeckman. You can criticize the O-LIne all you like, but an NFL line couldn’t have stopped that pass rush on saturday because they sent 8 and 9 guys after the QB. Boeckman needs to recognize blitzes and deliver quick stricks to his hot reads….which he has proven incapable of doing. Get Pryor in there against Troy, let him work out the offense in a game that the defense can keep us in and we’ll be fine. One other thing. You can’t expect to have the D hold out a team like USC if the offense is constantly going 3 and out and is turning the ball over in short field. Boeckman cost us the game on Saturday.

HEY guys im back! I have been saying it and im gonna keep saying it and before the season started i told my bestfriend who plays for OSU that to me there problem is not Xs and Os There problem is there mentality they are soft. I hear everybody blaming the OLINE and they do deserve some credit but when your senior gray shirt QB is flat out scared even when the OLINE blocks he isnt gonna make the right decisions. OSU is soft and it start with the COACHS. When you look at USC there mindset is we are going to whoop you and beat the crap out of you. Tressel need to stop bringing that gentelmans mentality to the football field because its rubbing off on the players and im gonna keep saying it that the only one on D that plays like a wild man is MALCOLM JENKINS the rest are flat out soft.

I predict a loss to Troy State on Saturday. The team reflects the personality of the qb, scared and confused.

I think it is time that OSU completely change their style of recruiting and the type of players they recruit.

First off all I see are negative comments, and views about the USC game. Yes we got our a**es handed to us; BUT, the Buckeyes beat themselves in the first half. Think about it: Dropped passes, movement on the O-line, Phatom holding calls, a called back TD, and a missed field goal. Add to it that USC was out of bounds AND the Stripes missed a holding call on the guy who tackled Boeckman, and the first half looks alot differently. When they came back out, and a quick hit was scored on them… the O-line lost it; and NO QB, no matter what his skill level, would have had any time…

I agree, changes need to be made at the scouting and recruiting levels.

I agree with VietVet’s comment about offensive innovation. When you play against equally skilled athletes, mere execution is not enough. What is wrong with learning from the Patriots or the Colts? You have to have a stud tight end and also throw screens or short passes to RBs over the middle against the blitz. And we need innovation on defense also. The OSU blitz has to be the least effective of any top 20 team these last several years. Tressel-good recruiter but starting to give Cooper a run for lousy game coach.

I was at the game in the 13th row. USC players were larger than OSU players and you couod see the fear in their eyes. I’m as big of a fan as anybody but we were just “Outplayed” and “Out Coached”. No offensive line at all and the defense just wasn’t hungry enough.

All I griped about last year was “we need a real offensive coordinator”. Even though we won last year, his play calling sucks. its so predictable. and when we plan a better team it shows. although i can’t explain Ohio University.

Will everyone just quit complaining? Teams win and lose….yes…the OSU Buckeyes lost a game…yes..a big one…big deal….I’m still proud to support them and they will always be my team. Tressell and the team are not above everyone else, they make mistakes! Get over it!

Acomment, a few complaints, and some advice. COMMENT: The Bucks do look a little tentative so far this season, but this is the same coaching staff that lead an amazing defense and bruising, exciting offense to the national championship the past 2 seasons. COMPLAINTS: Dude, turn off the capslock. You are either screaming via text or dont know how to type. Also, for those of you who are demanding we change our recruiting; Do you even know who we have been after the past 2 off-seasons? OSU has signed 5 top 100 lineman, the number 1 QB (Prior), and had a commitment from the number one running back a few weeks ago. All are agile, tough, and if history holds true based on how every recruiting magazine in the country has them ranked, they will all be NFL players if not NFL stars. ADVICE: Do your homework. If you have never coached, never played, and your expertise about football is based on Madden, please offer a little more than vicious rants. Thank you for allowing me to vent. Go Bucks!! O-H…!!
