Look who’s suddenly available
Do you want Leigh Bodden back?
The former Browns cornerback is suddenly a free agent after being swept out by the Detroit Lions, who went 0-16 and figure they can do at least that well with or without Bodden.
Detroit released six players in all today, including one-time Browns draft choice Jon Dunn, an offensive tackle.
Getting rid of Bodden assures that his four-year, $27 million contract won’t be kicking in because, well, he won’t be there anymore. In case you’re just tuning in, football contracts, unlike baseball, are not guaranteed, generally, beyond the signing bonus.
Not that it made any difference in last year’s record, but how good does that trade look now? You know, the one where the Browns sent Bodden and a third-round draft pick to the Lions for defensive tackle Shaun Rogers?
Bodden had a marginal year while Rogers earned his third trip to the Pro Bowl. Probably the best move of Phil Savage’s otherwise regrettable four-year tenure as general manager.
