You can easily convert various file formats including AZW/MOBI using freeware known as Calibre. It will even convert pdf files, but good luck trying to read heavily illustrated books on the small B&W screen.

From Wikipedia: “With the launch of the Kindle eBook reader, Amazon.com created the proprietary format, AZW. It is based on the Mobipocket standard, with a slightly different serial number scheme (it uses an asterisk instead of a dollar sign) and its own DRM formatting. Because the eBooks bought on the Kindle are delivered over its wireless system called Whispernet, the user does not see the AZW files during the download process. The Kindle format is now available on a variety of platforms.”

Can’t promote the Kindle enough. Just read that the new bottom of the line Kindle probably costs $5 more to make than they’re selling it for. Expect Kindle prices to go up, not down next year.

OT Vick, but I found your recent interview with Michael Williamson about his new book, Someplace Like America, very interesting and informative. He touched on a lot of things that get little to no attention in our national media. Thanks for having him on your program. After listening to him, I think I’m going to have to pick up his book.
