Tony La Russa goes out on top…
The last game of the World Series always leaves me feeling depressed. No more baseball until next spring. I always hate that.
The Saint Louis Cardinals made an amazing and improbable run to their championship. They simply never gave up. If you watched their multiple comebacks in Game Six over the Texas Rangers then you know what I mean. They were unstoppable.
And whether you love Tony La Russa, the Cardinal manager, or hate him, you have to respect the job he did. Today he retired. He’s done. He went out on top. I wasn’t surprised. La Russa showed some rare moments of emotion near the end of that historic run. You could tell that something was up with him.
Some of you might be wondering; gee, Vick, what does this have to do with books? Well, I’ll tell you. According to the Boston Globe La Russa had this to say about his plans for the future:
“La Russa answered flatly, “No,” when asked if he’ll ever manage again. He also said he had no plans to be a general manager, but said he is open to some sort of baseball job in the future.
“Maybe open a book store,” he said.”

That might be one career with a shorter shelf life than being a major league baseball manager.
