Meanest book reviews…
As a book reviewer I try to focus on books that other readers might enjoy. I don’t give many bad reviews. Perhaps I should? We have choices in life. I can build things. Or, I can tear things apart. I’m mostly a builder.
One time I did suggest in a review that the book might make a good doorstop. I do enjoy reading bad reviews. So I really enjoyed reading this:

I don’t mind a bad review, but what I don’t like are reviews that don’t tell you one way or the other if they liked the book. I found the NY Times Book Review is especially fond of this. All they do is ruin the book for you and never tell you if it’s any good. I usually read the last paragraph of the review first and if that does not give me a hint, then I go to Amazon for reviews (shows you how screwed up I am).

We have much more than enough negativity in our society already, Vick- so keep up the good work (and reviews)!

I don’t mind reading a negative review, as long as it isn’t a personal attack on the writer, per se. If the book has major flaws that make it either unreadable or it’s just poorly written, a negative review saves me the money I might have spent thinking that no one had given a negative review, so it must be a decent book. Some reviewers descend into pure meanness and direct attacks on the author because book 3 or 4 (or 10 or more) is ALSO not to their liking, thus the author deserves to be berated. My feeling is that if you didn’t care for the author on the first round, then leave his (or her) remaining books to someone who appreciates the genre or author’s work, who can give a balanced review.

Vick, it doesn’t really matter if it’s a positive or a negative review. As long as it’s an honest one, and I find you reviews to be honest. I’ve read to many reviews seen thru the prism of the reviewer’s personal beleifs and point of view. You’ve been able to avoid that.
