For fans of “The Wire” on HBO
George Pelecanos was one of the main writers for “The Wire” on HBO for the entire run of the series. He is also a mighty fine novelist. His most recent story is “The Cut.” (Little, Brown).
This marks the beginning of a new series for the author. His lead character is Spero Lucas, a veteran of the Iraq War. Lucas has a new gig recovering stolen property. Hence, the title. He gets his cut from the proceeds when he recovers items.
As this one begins he has been hired by a drug kingpin who is serving time in prison. The dealer is still running his operation from his cell. Someone has been stealing his valuable shipments of marijuana. The gang has had an ingenious method for shipping their pot deliveries but somebody is now intercepting them. Lucas is on the job now, searching the streets of Washington, D.C. He wants his piece of that action, his cut.
I interviewed Pelecanos recently. We talked about his new novel and his TV work. Did you know that he also writes for “Treme” on HBO? You can hear our conversation Sunday morning on WYSO (91.3fm) and www.wyso.org at 11.
