Amazon unveils their $199 Kindle Fire tablet
Amazon.com unveiled their Kindle Fire tablet computer today just in time for holiday shopping. They are pricing it at $199. The Apple iPad sells for $499. Amazon just upped the ante by offering the Kindle Fire at such a low price. Amazon is taking pre-orders for their new tablet now and they plan to begin filling orders on November 15 on a “first come, first served basis.”
If you go to Amazon’s front page you’ll see that they are taking a not so subtle swipe at Apple with this statement:
“There are two types of companies: those that work hard to charge customers more, and those that work hard to charge customers less. Both approaches can work. We are firmly in the second camp….” A 300 dollar swipe…!
The Apple Insider reports that: ” The device was described as a “souped-up version of the Kindle electronic-book reader” that will run the Google Android mobile operating system. It said that Amazon “painted over the rough surfaces” of Android with a “fresh and easy-to-use interface.”“

Bloomberg reports today that Amazon “may ship as many as 4 million units of the Kindle Fire this year, in part by undercutting Apple, said Brian Blair, an analyst at Wedge Partners Corp. in New York. Still, Amazon will need to release a larger version with a faster processor to siphon share from the iPad, which according to EMarketer Inc. had 85 percent of the market at the end of 2010.” (9/29/11)
