Is Amazon setting their sights on the iPad?
Apple’s iPad is the dominant tablet computer. Those companies that have tried to compete with their own tablets (like HP), have been swept away so far trying to compete with the iPad.
Amazon’s proprietary Kindle eBook reader has competition but it is the dominant eReader so far with just over half the market. Now it looks like Amazon might be preparing to fire their own tablet device across Apple’s bow.
According to a CNET report filed late this afternoon:
“In case you missed it, Amazon is having a big press event this Wednesday in New York to roll out something new. OK, maybe it’s not Apple kind of big. But it’s big enough, especially with the smart money on Jeff Bezos unveiling Amazon’s much-anticipated Android tablet (leaks suggest it may be called the Kindle Fire), which a lot of anti-Apple folks hope can slow down the iPad juggernaut.
Will we see two tablets—a 7-incher and a 10-incher—or just one? If it is a tablet, will it really be branded the “Kindle Fire” or something else? Will there be a new e-ink Kindle? After all, it’s been over a year since Amazon introduced the Kindle 3—isn’t it time for a new model?”

There are two very different philosophies in play here. Apple wants your money up front, while Amazon is socialistically selling at near cost because they want your book dollars and have hard wired their Kindles to make it as easy as possible to buy book from Amazon. Amazon is about leveraging their monopoly, while Apple is all about protecting their monopoly through the use of Apple software.

I haven’t jumped on the e reader or tablet band wagons yet. I like the idea of some competition to lower the price down to my range.
