Border’s sales plummet…

Some news stories are so obvious that we are amazed they were even printed. Here’s one example: according to Publisher’s Weekly “As Border’s fades away, its latest monthly operating figures shows sales in the July 31-August 27 period of $13.7 million, down from $94.7 million in the prior month.”

Well, duh. The Border’s Books chain is going out of business. Of course their sales are declining. They have been practically giving books away for Gutenberg’s sake!

This ranks up there with walking into my favorite breakfast spot this morning, with my hooded jacket covering my body while dripping big drops of moisture onto the restaurant’s floor. I had parked as close to the building as possible. I overheard someone ask, “Is it really raining that hard?” I would have loved to have commented, “No, I went out and soaked myself with a hose.” Do people think any more (or can they think any less)?

Even as Borders was closing its stores’ doors, clearance sale prices were no better in many cases than the Amazon price. The article notes book sales were down but sales of fixtures, etc. were up. Guess that’s what happens when the only desirable things left in the stores are the shelves! The demise of Borders leaves my small city, a shopping destination for people in four rural counties, without a single store specializing in new books.
