“If I was to read just one book…”

The other day I was riding my bicycle along a country road when I heard the distinctive sound of a VW van (vintage 1960’s) approaching from behind me. I pulled over to the other side of the lane to allow it to pass.

It pulled up to me and stopped. The driver rolled down his window and said: “If I was to read just one book this summer what would it be?

I paused for a few seconds and pondered my response. Then I said: “THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME” (That’s the new novel by the Ohioan Donald Ray Pollock).

The driver stared at me for a second then said “thanks” and motored off. As he drove away from me I noticed a bumper sticker on the back of his vehicle. It read: Put the Christ back in Christmas.

I hope that was the right book to suggest?

“Me Talk Pretty One Day” or the Bible. I was driving to work the other day and saw a great bumper sticker, “When I Grow Up I Want to be Too Big to Fail.” The other bumper sticker on the was not bad either “Born Right the First Time.”

Jamrach’s Menagerie by Carol Birch was a great read. I hope this comment is not too random. Remarkable is a word too small to describe this book in my opinion.

I can’t decide between “A Dawn Like Thunder” or “Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors”. Both made me feel as if I was there.

I would also go with the Bible, if only because so many of our current problems stem from grossly inaccurate readings of the various books contained therein. Better yet, maybe The Gospel of St. Thomas, which is the best source for things that Jesus actually said, as opposed to some of the conveniently manufactured quotes inserted later by Roman emperors eager to dilute Jesus’s teachings to make them more compatible with the needs of the Roman empire (see Church, the Holy Roman Catholic). I constantly find it confusing that those who most loudly proclaim their obeisance to Jesus are the most obsessed with abortion (not mentioned in the Old or New Testaments), capital punishment (NOT Jesus endorsed), rigging the tax codes to favor the rich over the poor, and using war as a form of diplomacy. Reread the Sermon on the Mount and then see if you can find any Tea Party proclamations that conform to Jesus’s teachings.

The Bible. It is the book of instruction for all, in any situation. The world is going down and we need instruction more than ever before. It also provides comfort, strength and tells us what to expect in the future. It has never failed and never will. I am so glad to have it.
