The best books of 2011 (so far)….
There’s a stack of books on the corner of my desk. A pile of fiction. Another mound of non-fiction. These are books that I have set aside. They were all published this year. And they are my favorite books (so far) this year. My personal faves-therefore my best books of 2011.
I just added a couple more books to the stack. I’m fortunate to be able to read some books before they are officially released. I just finished a pair of novels that totally knocked me out. I can’t say too much about them because they are not available yet. But I’ll tell you their titles and the authors so that you can watch out for them.
One is the new book by James Lee Burke. FEAST DAY OF FOOLS will be published in September by Simon & Schuster. James Lee Burke is one of our greatest writers. His books usually come out in July. For the past 6 or 7 years I have interviewed him every July for his current book. He’s also one of my favorite authors to interview. This new one is worth waiting a couple of extra months. Weighing in at over 400 pages this is not a Dave Robicheaux book. Burke has written another book featuring the aging Texas sheriff Hackberry Holland.
Hack Holland is a Korean War veteran so he must be about the same age as James Lee Burke, in his 70’s. Hack’s jurisdiction is a county on the Mexican border. If you read the previous book in this series, you’ll recall that Burke had introduced readers to his most insidious villain ever, the Thompson machine gun totin’ Preacher Jack. And in this new book Preacher Jack is back. I think this is Burke’s best book yet!
And I just finished THE END OF THE WASP SEASON by Denise Mina. This is another September title and it features Detective Inspector Alex Morrow. In this one Morrow is 5 months pregnant with twins. Set in Glasgow (Mina is Scottish), this is one dazzling murder mystery. Mina is actually doing a brief US tour for this one and I’m really hoping to obtain an interview with her when she does.
Put these books on your list for September. They are fabulous reads!!
