I like Ike

IMG_4161.JPG
I LIKE IKE (in Lithuanian!)

Family get togethers were always great for political discussions. One of my relatives (a WWII vet) was a staunch Republican. His favorite president was Dwight Eisenhower. This relative had a whole shelf filled with books about Ike. When this particular relative passed on a few years ago I inherited his collection. I have been making my way through them ever since. And I’m beginning to develop my own appreciation for Eisenhower.

I thought of my relative the other day. There’s a new book coming out that I wish I could buy for him. “Eisenhower 1956: The President’s Year of Crisis—Suez and the Brink of War” is being published next week. I’m impressed with the timing. Here’s a book about an almost forgotten chapter in history-it unfolded in the center of the Arab world, a part of the world that many of us are currently observing with renewed interest.

Maybe now would be a good time to pick up one of Ambrose’s books on Ike. Any recommendations Vick?

That’s right an “Ike” bike in the fifties. So, your 8-9 year old kid brain remembers obliterating a 62-63 Rose rookie card, eh? Sure it wasn’t a Carmen Fanzone, Dick Raditz or Pumpsie Green? That Rose card would be worth some coin. I never used the clothespin method. My buddies and me thought only girls used those. No offense intended. I always took you more for a McGovern or Johnson type than a McCarthyite. Who knew?

Really, Downsized? An Ike? In 1968 I had a Gene McCarthy flower sticker on my bike. And I can recall earlier days when we would clip baseball cards onto our wheels with clothespins. We thought the sound of the cards hitting our spokes was very Steve McQueen- as in the Great Escape. I’m positive that one of the cards I obliterated with my spokes was a Pete Rose rookie card. Or maybe I’m misremembering? Perhaps it was just an Ernie Fazio….

Nice looking button, Vick. I once had a bike that had an “I like Ike” sticker on it. You must know he used both parties to advance his political interests. And, his accusations and warning of a “military industrial complex” were a fear mongering tactic to lower our military spending. He was totally wrong and as history has proved we have spent ourselves militarily to a position of world dominance and peace. Through military spending we brought down the Communist menace in the Soviet Union and made ourselves the “decider” in world affairs. I also doubt he would have nuked the Japs, which saved countless American soldiers and casualties. Ike was an okay General but, decidedly not a good President.
