Is Border’s Books on the brink?
Times are tough at the Border’s Books chain of bookstores. Border’s seems to be teetering on the edge of something. What will that something be?
A recent article in the Washington Post reveals just how tough things are these days for the struggling Border’s chain:
“It recently suspended payments to book publishers. Dozens of its stores across the country, including several in the Washington area, have closed. For many in the industry - and for this group of Borders regulars - the question is not whether the chain will go under, but when.”
That all sounds rather dire, doesn’t it? To read the rest of the article click here:

Figures, I just cashed in some rewards points to get a Borders gift card. Hope it arrives in time.

I received a Border’s gift card for Christmas 2009. I have to drive more than 40 miles to get to a Borders, but I made a trip last week because I was getting nervous about whether the store would still be in business if I waited much longer.

I’ve always had the feeling that Borders was more interested in selling me an “experience” or a board game than a book. Weren’t they the ones who originated the in-store coffee shops?

Two problems: 1) books have become a cheap online commodity. They are easy and cost effective to order and ship. 2) Borders has been marvelously unresponsive to the challenge of teh intertubez. They’re just darned expensive. If I am willing to wait less than a week and order online, I can save up to 50% on a book that Borders offers. I have always felt that chains like Borders should partner with Amazon and provide “in store pickup” of online orders, at online prices. They could easily impose a process to avoid undercutting their walk-in traffic, such as a 24 hour wait before pickup.

As a Borders Express is the only remaining store dedicated to new books in my county, I hope the chain can somehow survive. Browsing at Amazon is not the same.
