Christmas madness
It’s Christmas Eve and the madcap behavior seems to be on the rise. I was in downtown Yellow Springs this morning. I ordered breakfast at one of the popular eateries in town. While I waited for my food I browsed a bit in this shop where I had ordered my meal. The place was jammed with diners and shoppers.
I was notified that my breakfast was ready. I had ordered a burrito with a side of potatoes. As I approached my plate there was a fellow walking in front of me. I know him. He’s a psychotherapist. I was walking right behind him.
As he approached my unattended breakfast he reached over and started grabbing my potato slices. They were warm. You could see the steam coming off of them. He quickly ate three of them and was reaching for another one when I said: “are you enjoying my breakfast?” He immediately replied: “oh, I thought they were hors d’oeuvres.” No apology. He just continued on his merry way. Christmas madness, I say!
All I could do was laugh. The holidays are a time to grin and bear it. Coming up in 30 minutes at 1:30 you will have an opportunity to chuckle if you tune into WYSO (91.3fm) for part 2 of my interview with Ralph Keyes. His book is “Euphemania-Our Love Affair with Euphemisms.”

You have to admire a man who eats your breakfast. You were probably the last person in the village he hadn’t done that to. He then went home and journaled about it, critically reviewing each item of food eaten. I could speculate further, but not in a family newspaper, especially not on Christmas Eve.

Come on, Vick…you won’t admit that you thought, just for a second, that you should’ve smacked him? You know, manners are a sign that we respect one another. Manners keep the barbarians at bay. You ran into a barbarian psychotherapist today…and in all places, “warm and liberal” (sorry, Centerville) Yellow Springs. It’s also telling that you knew he was a psychotherapist. Do you need a hug, big guy? Anyway…Merry Christmas, Vick. I look forward to your presentations and comments in the coming year.
