Bill Clinton, Andrew Johnson, and Tricky Dick…

Question: What do former presidents Andrew Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Bill Clinton have in common?

Answer: The whiff of impeachment.

Andrew Johnson was Abraham Lincoln’s VP. When Lincoln was assassinated, Johnson became president. Johnson was originally a southern Democrat. After the Civil War ended his policies for reconstructing the former Confederacy angered many northern Republican senators. They tried to impeach him. He escaped impeachment by one vote. According to David O. Stewart, the author of “Impeached - the Trial of President Andrew Johnson and the Fight for Lincoln’s Legacy” (Simon and Schuster), Johnson’s close call was the result of bribery and corruption on a sizable scale.

Richard M. Nixon resigned from office to escape the possibility of being impeached.

Bill Clinton survived an impeachment trial not that long ago.

I spoke to David O. Stewart about his book and the odd trio of Clinton, Nixon, and Andrew Johnson. You can hear our conversation today (Friday). at 1:30, on WYSO (91.3fm).

Vick, I’ll leave the editing to you, I was just curious. If I was up to editing a blog I’d start my own. Keep up the good work.

Irish, the line for people who want to volunteer to edit my blog posts already stretches clear from Yellow Springs to Wright Pat. I write’em the way I write’em. At the time I felt that the one moniker, the best known one; Tricky Dick, was sufficient. It did occur to me to use others but that gave me the Willies, be they slick, wet, or merely Horton…

I think the book would be interesting. I have some respect for Clinton and Nixon. Much more respect and support than I have for Obama. Obama’s work seems underhanded and evil in the sense of working against our freedoms and the well being of our country. I actually believe Obama would sell us out if we don’t have our Reps catch him and block his work in the shadows. I like the concept of the book!

Now Vick, you know only Messrs Johnson and Clinton were impeached. Just curious as to why you used Mr Nixon’s moniker but didn’t use the charming label Slick Willie for Mr Clinton?
