“Muhammad: A Story of the Last Prophet”
Harper Collins will be publishing “Muhammad: A Story of the Last Prophet” by Deepak Chopra on September 21.
They just announced that you will be able to purchase the e-book version sooner. That is unusual. In fact the e-book versions of some new book releases have actually been delayed in recent months so that publishers could maximize the higher revenues generated from traditional books. You know, the ones that actually have physical pages that you turn.
Perhaps you are wondering why they are doing this? Apparently, they are hoping to increase sales of this book on account of the current controversy over the so-called Ground Zero Mosque not to mention that preacher in Florida who was threatening to burn Muhammad’s sacred book.
Chopra’s publisher wants to strike while the books are hot (so to speak). Thus, the early availability of the e-book version.
Yeah, that Muhammad. I have interviewed Deepak Chopra on a number of occasions. He’s a bright fellow. I’ll be curious to see how this new book sells…

Historians and classical/ present day biographers including the smart Deepak have scanned Islam’s theological corpus while writing about Muhammad. There is a big question mark about teh accuracy of these sources, as they also tell us that Muhammad went round all his nine to eleven wives and King Solomon all his one hundred wives in one night, and that Muhammad caused the mooon to split, a dry well to swell up, continuous one week rain in deser and so on. All these are myths and fables but unfortunately so much scholarship is lost on them. But why?? Because this fellow Muhammad single handedly introduced a faith that ran over Christanity like a gigantic surge and continues to challenge it to this day. If one really wants to know about Muhammad (d. 632 CE), he/she must delve into the book (the Koran) that was compiled / revealed in his era - about 200 years before his first biography was ever published by Ibn Hisham (d. 834). Get a copy of Essential Message of Islam by Muhammad Yunus and you have glimpses of his life drawn from some 200 Koranic verses based on a historic critical reading.

Vick, internet sources say the Jihad proposed against you has been suspended…lol…….One of the most comprehension textbooks I had in comparative religions studies was Ninian Smart’s “The Religious Experience of Mankind” which preceded Campbell and, of cource, 9-11. Ironically, I was in those classes during Iranian hostages times. During lecture a rather intelligent lad spoke up and called the Ayatollah an ‘idiot.’ The student was asked to leave the class and dropped from the course. I think a point should be made that academia is much different than the street brawls of opinion. To study and learn requires understanding and basic foundations. That does not preclude personal positions but more often than not offers the collegian more support for those positions as well as challenges. I’ll presume the officers and NCO’s currently serving in Afghanistan received the same cultural indoctrination I received before insertion. Some comments responding to the FL minister are obviously from those who have not had such training and experience. I agree, Vick, Chopra is a very smart guy and I also agree with a tinge of cynicism publishers exploit the moment; even more effectively than print media in some cases. I do think books such as this, as well as D.T. Suzuki’s treatises on Buddhism/Zen are efforts to inform rather reinforce ignorance. Of course most religions have an administration of faith reuiring followers to accept that belief is the one and only true belief. But, that’s administration of faith, not faith itself. Finally, consider all this, those who demonize Islam as a whole based upon the claims of a few portray the essences of racism which this country still struggles to overcome. If Islam is the perceived enemy, then it would be wise for those detractors to understand it before attacking it. That’s just a simple military principle.

It is a biography, Philman. If he had a nine year-old wife one would expect that to be mentioned. Was that uncommon in that time and place? In Europe during that same era there were marriages, even royal ones, between very young people, boys and girls. Those were the times that they lived in, in Arabia, Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, etc. It wasn’t that unusual for young girls to be married anywhere in the world. 800 years later there were still girls who were getting married in Kentucky, they might have been slightly older but they were still girls, Philman. And they probably got married with their Bibles in close proximity….

hmm… trying again: I’d rather have an e-book version of R.F. Dibble’s “Mohammed”. It’s from 1926 or thereabouts, so it’s not tainted with modern prejudices and post-9/11 biases, which I suspect Chopra’s has.
