Kill the dead (zombies)

Publishers seek publicity. They want to get our attention. Sometimes they will resort to bizarre methods to get you to notice what they are doing.

Here’s an example; I just opened my mail and was puzzled to find that one package contained a couple of shotgun shells. They were empty shells-they bore a message on them as you can see in the photo.

Apparently Richard Kadrey’s publisher is trying to create some early buzz for his forthcoming novel Kill the Dead: A Sandman Slim Novel. These shotgun shells were the first early blast across this reviewer’s bow.

The message being: notice this book, remember this weird mail, consider a review.

Okay, consider it noticed~boom…kaboom. The book comes out on October 5.

My son has several books about Zombie wars. They are big sellers, and they describe what to do when faced with attacking Zombies. I asked him why he likes to read that kind of stuff. He said it was fun to read. Then I asked him if he thought it might be useful someday. He told me that if so, he would be ready, and that he had been training his whole life to survive in a world gone mad with Zombies. On another note, years ago a friend and co-worker landed a job as an extra on the first remake of “Night of the Living Dead”. He lives in the Pittsburgh area. He is the last Zombie that the heroine dispatches in the movie, and every now and then we watch it for a good laugh.

Never heard of the Zombie Walk, don’t get the appeal. Was it a charitable event? Ireland has banshees and leprechauns, so I suppose zombies are a possibility…

Ok, Irish~I just assumed you were making a comment about the publicist suggesting that I could use these shells to protect myself from zombies. Oh, and the zombie gathering in YS was called the Zombie Walk. There were quite a few photos of it here on the website last week. I think most of the zombies were probably imported from other locales. Heck, some of them might have even been Irish zombies?! Who knows?

I didn’t mention zombies, just thought empty, primer-less shot gun shells were about as useful as nipples on a man. Are you insinuating there are hundreds of brain dead people in Yellow Springs??

Hey Irish, yeah-these shells will really help out if I encounter any zombies. Have you seen any zombies out your way? There must have been a hundred of them out the other night in Yellow Springs. They seemed fairly harmless though…

The author’s publicist just sent me an e-mail. Here’s an excerpt: “Here at HarperCollins, we are so excited about the October release of Richard Kadrey’s KILL THE DEAD. I hope the KILL THE DEAD shotgun shells you received come in handy should any zombies find themselves out of Kadrey’s L.A. and into your hometown.”

Well, I think the title refers to killing zombies. Do you believe in zombies? In fiction you can kill the dead all day long…

Not possible. Kill means to take life away. You cannot take away what is already gone.
