Mockingjay soars

Every day I check the list of best-selling books on Amazon.com. The hottest book on the chart these days is “Mockingjay” (The Final Book of The Hunger Games) (Scholastic) by Suzanne Collins.

This is the third book in a trilogy of young adult fiction by Collins and apparently demand is high for this title. It has been #1 on Amazon all week based on pre-orders. The book will be published next week.

Coincidentally, Scholastic was the US publisher for the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling. After that series ended Scholastic has been searching for another series that would have the appeal (and the sales) of the Potter books. Their 39 Clues series of young adult books performed well but it certainly wasn’t at the levels of the Potter books.

Suzanne Collins is drawing some comparisons to JK Rowling. I have not read Collins yet but I plan to do so.

Does anybody have any thoughts on Collins and this series of books? Are your children interested in these books?

Hunger games is one of the most exciting book sI have ever read. I am able to say I was in love with the Harry Potter books, was intense with Twilight fever, but HUNGER GAMES is the my new obsession. The writing is simple enough to follow, but complex enough to clearly imagine what you are reading. And the story line is so heartbreakingly wonderful. Anyone who is looking for a good series to get into should consider Hunger Games, GO TEAM PEETA!

I am an English teacher who was introduced to these books around January when I am in the middle of deep teaching. I waited to read the first book, H. Games when I went on vacation. Happy to say, I spend the first two days at sea attached to my Kindle as I zoomed through both books. I am getting ready to sleep now so when midnight hits, I can read the final book. Want to know why I am so excited? Great books, no sex or suicide or ugly issues. Just fun books with a good story. Nothing deep, just eye candy, but they are worth it. Go Team Gale!

I am a very busy student… but no matter how busy the schedule is for me, I will MAKE time to read the conclusion to Susan Collins’ The Hunger Games series. I devoured the first two books in one week - and have reread them (my favorite parts) many times. They are very easy to read, but that in no way detracts from the quality of the writing. Suzanne Collins has managed to create a series that appeals to ages across the spectrum and I have yet to hear or read one bad or even semi-bad review on the series. The Hunger Games serves as an adventure anyone can live and relive time and time again… and I’m positive the third book will not dissapoint!

The people on Books on the Nightstand podcast picked this as one of their “books we can’t wait for you to read” choices. Many of the listeners then communicate on Goodreads.com and many of them have had very good comments about the series. I, like you, Vick, have not read any - yet.

As a mom, I’ve read the first two and can’t wait for the third. A friend who’s a teacher at the JVS recommended them and said her classes loved them. My child doesn’t devour books like I do and is into her own genre but she may be interested in them soon.
