Amazon fights back-Kindles are coming to Target…

Amazon.com is fighting back in the eBook reader wars. Apple just announced that they have sold 2 million iPads during the first 2 months that the product has been available.

Amazon’s propietary eBook reader, the Kindle, has been the early leader in the eBook market. Now Amazon’s fighting back as this market just keeps getting more competitive. Apple has retail stores for selling their iPad, a tablet computer that is ideal for reading eBooks. Barnes & Noble is selling their Nook eBook readers at their retail locations. Many other competing devices are available at “brick & mortar” stores.

Amazon has been selling all those Kindles on-line. Until now. Amazon just announced that as of this Sunday you will be able to purchase Kindles at many Target locations as well.

Now that Amazon will be selling their leading product, the Kindle, in retail stores we will see that the battle for eReader dominance will continue to escalate. This should be interesting…remember VHS vs. Beta? Yesterday’s technology wars are the eBay collectibles of today.

I just recently recieved a Kindle as a gift and it does irritate me that a newer model was in the works and customers were kept in the dark. Appreciate the article.

As a Kindle owner I do read the Kindle discussion boards on Amazon. It was discussed when they first went into the stores - I believe the date was something like April 25, but only on those select locations. Obviously that “test run” was successful. I just hope the Target employees are more knowledgeable & honest than many B&N employees appear to be.

A reader just e-mailed me to inquire which area Target stores will be carrying the Amazon Kindle? So I called around. The first store I called had no idea what I was talking about. (I guess it was “breaking news” to that Target employee?) The Target across from Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek will be stocking the Kindle. Call ahead to make sure that they have them in stock.

How do you define breaking news? Go to Google News, enter the search terms “Kindle” and Target” and you’ll get 130+ links to news media across the country about Kindle being offered at Target stores. Those stories have been posted in the past 24 hours. I guess you must be way ahead of everybody else. Congratulations.

This isn’t exactly “breaking news”. They started rolling out Kindles in Target stores in Florida & their flagship store in Minneapolis in April. As far as B&N, I have read several accounts of the salespeople there flat out lying about the capabilities of the Kindle in comparison to the Nook (Kindle doesn’t offer free books, Kindle doesn’t use wireless so you have to have a computer to purchase books, etc) so it sounds like they are the ones who are getting desperate. Not to mention their absolutely horrible customer (dis)service which I have experienced firsthand.
