Fergie showed up - I didn’t

Former British royal Sarah Ferguson got dipped in some hot tea this week when she was busted accepting bribes to grant access to her former hubbie, Prince Andrew.

That bit of nastiness did not deter her from showing up this week to give a speech at an event at Book Expo America in New York.

BEA is the big annual publishing bash that typically closes out the yearly publishing cycle. By Memorial Day many top publishing execs will probably already be camped out on Fire Island for the summer.

I usually attend BEA. I have been to the past six. But not this one. The landscape of publishing has changed. BEA used to always run into the weekend; Weds. to Sat. or Thurs. to Sun. Not any more. They are having it in the middle of the week this time.

BEA used to move around. Chicago. Los Angeles. Washington. New York. A couple of years ago it was scheduled for Vegas. Then the econony went south. Everything contracted. Now BEA is strictly kept in the home of the industry-NYC.

So why am I skipping it? I havemy reasons. There’s the airline fare to NYC without a weekend stay. That’s way too expensive. Then there’s the return right before Memorial Day weekend. That’s a ludicrous notion. The past couple of BEA’s have been disasters when it came to trying to fly into New York. Last year I spent most of the day sitting in a plane on the runway in DC. The year before we circled the area for hours then they dumped us in Philly at 1am. The airline told us to take a bus to NYC instead. Our plane tickets proved worthless for a flight that actually went where it was supposed to go. The airlines are a nightmare these days.

So, I didn’t attend BEA this year. Here is what I’m missing. click HERE:
