Can this book save the world?

unrealistic expectations?

The publishing industry is in a slump. Every major publisher is praying for the next big book, a blockbuster like THE DA VINCI CODE by Dan Brown. It has sold over 80 million copies.

Brown’s long awaited and oft delayed sequel is coming out on September 15. His publisher, Random House is hoping and praying and sweating and worrying. Or so I would imagine, if publishing houses could perspire. Let’s just say that they must be very nervous and excited.

Over at Amazon.com, the world’s largest on-line bookseller, the hype is building. If you click on Amazon’s front page today there is an announcement about the book from Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos.

Here’s a quote from Bezos:

This is one of the most anticipated publishing events of all time, and curiosity has been building. Even inside Random House, only a half dozen employees have been allowed to read THE LOST SYMBOL in its entirety. The book remains so deeply under wraps that we’ve agreed to keep our stockpile under 24 hour guard in its own chain-link enclosure, with two locks requiring two separate people for entry.

Wow! A chain-link fence! Two locks! Now, that is high security! I hope that I get my copy on September 15……Honey, a Brinks truck just pulled up with armed guards…wait, it is only UPS. But he has one of those giant water pistols!

What do you think? Are you as excited about the book as some people are?

My mother is very excited about this book. I haven’t read any of Dan Brown’s work and don’t plan to.

LOL, Alice, I’m sorry if I derailed your train of thought.

I was going to post something about the Dan Brown book, but then I read Vick and Irish’s back-and-forth and now I can’t remember what I was going to say about the book. Also, I think I’m blushing.

Vick, it’s not my intention to hijack your thread into a political discussion. I just noticed the similarity in the excitement/hype of your two posts.

You mean :”YES WE CAN have a cultural renaissance!” That’s more likely than Dan Brown’s book saving the world, don’t you think, Irish? Don’t tell me the honeymoon is already over? It has barely been ten months (sarcasm alert*).

As someone known to be sarcastic from time to time, I’m a bit embarrsssed that I didn’t catch it. But, in my defense it reminded me of your 11/6/08 blog post which prompted my 1st comments. Another post in which you seemed overly excited.

Yes, Irish and Flipper, did you perhaps detect a note of sarcasm in that caption? Did you detect any sarcasm in my post? The caption has two purposes. First, and most important, is that readers might have their interest piqued enough to click on the post. You did. That’s wonderful. Secondly, I’m being sarcastic! Sorry, I guess I’m being way too subtle with that caption..

There is only one book that can do that and it is not Lost Symbol.

“Save the world” that’s a bit of hyperbole, don’t you think? Maybe save the publishing world. One would assume the profits from 80 million books would keep Random House in the black for years.
