my letter to the editor
On rare occasions I will write a letter to the editor of a newspaper. I don’t do it often. I wrote one this week. Here it is:
To the Editor of the Yellow Springs News:
Recently, I realized a long held dream; I interviewed Senator George McGovern. Some readers will recall that he ran for president in 1972. He lost that election to Richard Nixon.
Senator McGovern just wrote a biography of Abraham Lincoln. The first half of our conversation aired last week on WYSO (91.3fm) The second half will be broadcast this Sunday morning at 10:30.
WYSO has a new station manager, Neenah Ellis. Neenah is a gifted radio producer. I’m excited to have her here in Yellow Springs. WYSO just completed their spring membership campaign. Did you make pledge?
You still can. Why don’t you mail them a check today? The address is 150 E. South College Street, Yellow Springs, OH. 45387

Thanks for listening to my interview with Senator George McGovern!By Raoul

Thank you both for completely missing all of my points, and resorting to ‘Bush lied-people died’. Was 9/11 not foisted on Bush? I would say that pre-Iraq inavasion, good old anti-American hatred was at an all time high. Was not Al Queda the main enemy we confronted in Iraq? Have you guys read up on any of this? I will grant you Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11; never said they did. As for that crazy nut Saddam, who knew he was bluffing? He would have given his right testicle to have WMD’s, and told the CIA operative assigned to him that he moved all his stuff to Syria before the invasion. But spare me the ‘Wild eyed extremism’ remarks. There is nothing wild-eyed and extreme in defending your country and it’s citizens in a time and place when weakness invites death and destruction on a scale of, well, how about 9/11? I think ‘wild eyed extremism’ is a better description of Al Gore, who has declared war on common sense. Thank God for the Supreme Court.By downsized

Iraq wasn’t responsible for 9/11, Raoul. Bush/Cheney ignored the intelligence services and went to war for no apparent reason. They had no strategy for after the takeover. Hence, 7 years later our presence remains a recruitment vehicle for anti-American hatred. Comparing Bush to FDR, Truman, Grant and Lincoln is absurd even for you. They had wars foisted upon them. Bush chose to fight the wrong people and we continue to pay for his blunders. “Mission Accomplished”.By vick

Don’t forget the WMD, Raoul. They’ll find them, right? Maybe they are in that hidey hole with Osama?By Raoul

Vick, just who was it that was causing us all the trouble in Iraq? I think if you were honest, you would see that it was Osama after all…and his crafty Al Queda minions. Until the surge booted them out. Now they are trying to regroup in Pakistan, Afghanistan, where ever they can, that is, what’s left of them. Since terrorism has no borders, no sovereighnty, ‘Wild eyed extremist’ Bush decided to ‘smoke em’ out and get em’ running’. The fact that they ran to Iraq, where all of our guns are, made it easy to find them. Except for Osama; who sits in a spider/hidey/cave-hole somewhere. Don’t you think Osama has been pretty much neutralized? What has he really been able to do these last 7 years? Does anybody in the media care that he has all but dissapeared? Vick, nobody is a fan of war, and Bush is not on anybody’s list of best Presidents. But to call him a “Wild eyed extremist” is way beyond the pale. He saw his job as keeping America safe from further acts of terrorism. He succeeded. Many of our war-time Presidents have taken far stronger measures than Bush; FDR putting US citizens in internment camps, Lincoln suspending the writ of habeous corpus, Truman dropping atomic bombs, Grant and others rounding up Native Americans on reservations, and so on. Were they ‘Wild Eyed Extremists’? I don’t think so. Neither was W. Those kind of accusations do not serve the public discourse very well. I think you and Mr. McGovern are dead wrong on this.By vick

Raoul, are you sure it isn’t a spider hole? O, that’s right, when the leader of the most powerful nation in the world couldn’t find the guy who actually masterminded 9/11 he decided to go after Osama’s twin brother Sadaam, he of the spider hole. For seven years W was supposedly trying to find some guy hiding in a hole. Of course, after a while he completely stopped talking about him. Osama bin Who?By Raoul

Vick, I think Osama is in his hidey-hole, trying to figure out what happened to all of his terrorist buddies. That’s what happens when one “wild eyed extremist” tangles with another.By Gary

Vick: We are glad to hear you are pleased with the direction of WYSO. That fact alone will continue to have a positive impact on the community’s support of the station. Four hours of WYSO Bluegrass last night by a fire on a chilly Spring evening was my idea of heaven. George McGovern is a hero.By vick

Raoul, I suppose our home grown extremists failed in the end. Where is Osama, by the way?By Raoul

I’m feeling all verklempt now, Downsized. Really. Vick, I listened to your interview just a short while ago. Nice job. George McGovern is a class act all the way. I think he would have been a good President had he been elected. I enjoyed your last anecdote about your grandfather and the sign in the yard. But of course, I had to laugh when you and Mr. McGovern agreed in characterizing the Bush administration as “wild eyed extremism”. Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn’t “wild eyed extremism” what Bush finally had to confront?By downsized

Miracles can happen. I heartily agree with Raoul. WYSO, Public Broadcasting and thoughtful forums deserve everyone’s support. As does Vick for his fine, tireless efforts providing an intelligent, serious and often light hearted forum for public discourse. WYSO and the DDN are well served by the distinguished service of many good citizens. These are times that we need to remember democracy has a price. I’ve been a past out-of-state supporter of WYSO. I sincerely hope to be again, soon.By vick

Vick, we agree that WYSO is a worthy place for a donation. I will try to make a point of listening to the interview. Thanks for the interesting blog, and keep it up.
