book biz lopping off the pork…

porkless?

Every year I attend the annual book publishing blowout known as Book Expo America. It is held in various cities around the beginning of June each year. At least they used to do it that way.

Last year’s conference was in Los Angeles. Over the past few years it has been held in Chicago, Washington, D.C., and New York City. This year’s BEA will be in New York again. So will next year’s. And the next. And the next…They cancelled Washington for next year and Las Vegas for the following year and moved the conferences back to NYC for the near future (4 years). That belt is getting tighter. No AIG level bonus action in the book biz…

NYC is the hub for book publishing. A lot of New York book people didn’t make it to LA last year. The book publishing industry was already feeling the recession. Cross country plane fares were the first things to go.

So in the near future the big book bash will be a cab fare’s distance away for many book publishing types, in New York City.

They used to throw some wonderful parties. I wonder if that will also be curtailed? Last year I went to the party for Ted Turner at Larry King’s crib in Beverly Hills. Larry served some yummy appetizers! Oprah’s women were mingling. We got an up close view of some astounding plastic surgery. Larry King resembles King Tut! (sigh)

Sounds like he speaks as well as he writes!

Irish, I did a radio interview with David McCullough for the paperback of his biography of John Adams. He was in Washington, D.C. I called him at his hotel. He has that amazing voice. It was almost like interviewing the voice of God.

Vick, that’s why I teach my kids about American History. My daughter has read parts of my copies of David McCulloughs “1776” and “John Adams” and my little guy is a presidental historian already. Can’t trust a terrorist to instruct my babies!!

Irish, Bill Ayres is way too busy editing the history textbooks for the Public School system to bother with anything else. Doesn’t that just make your heart sing?

Irishguy, it was McCain who made a pledge to stop earmarks. Remember? He’s the shorter white guy who lost the election.

now Vick, I’m just keeping an open mind. Mr Obama lied about having lobbyests in his administration, no more earmarks, how he’d go over legislation line by line, how they post the stimulus bill online for 5 days so it could be read, so it’s only natural to consider the possibility he may have lied about his good pal Mr Ayers helping him out with his book. I’m afraid I never made enough money to interest Bernie.

Irish, if you are gullible enough to give credence to the Bill Ayers as ghostwriter for Obama fallacy you might want to consider an investment opportunity; I hear Bernie Madoff is still accepting donations from enthusiastic “investors.” Mail him a check. His investment portfolio is just as reliable as your Bill Ayers ghostwriter joke…

Vick, I imagine W will use a ghost writer, most folks do. I heard Bill Ayers was Mr Obama’s ghost writer.

Oh, O’bama. Well, Irish, 500k is chickenfeed compared to what George W. Bush is getting for his new book. Obama writes his own stuff. Do you think the Bush book will be ghost written?

No Vick, the Irish guy who traces his lineage back to Moneygall, Mr O’bama

Vick, I always find it funny when someone writes in to tell you what your job is.

Bill O’Reilly did? Was that an advance payment for his next book? Luck o’ the Irish!

True Vick, I fact I heard today that Mr O. just pocketed a cool $500,000.00 in a book deal.

Politics is always a hot button issue, Irish. Bear in mind that most politicians, political commentators and pundits, from Obama, the Clintons, and Joe Biden to Rush, Ann, David Horowitz, Al Franken, Michael Moore, etc. - these people write a LOT of books.

Vick, just trying to help out and stir things up for you. I’ ve noticed the book posts don’t seem to draw the traffic the political ones do.

OK, Irish. I looked up that reference. Now I get it. Sorry, Emmitt. I assumed Irish was kidding around. As I have said on other occasions; I write about books and whatever I fancy writing about. It would seem that some of these topics do resonate with readers. That’s the point. Wouldn’t you agree?

Emmitt T. Beaver, Irish? I don’t know this person. Was he the one who wore the flight helmet and had Bullwinkle for a sidekick?

Vick, are just doing a book related post to make Emmett Thornton Beaver happy?
