Arianna Huffington won’t give me the time of day…
Arianna Huffington is a top blogger. She’s a pundit. She’s got a gazillion readers for her blog the Huffington Post. I love listening to her on the radio program Left, Right and Center.
I guess you could call me a fan. Or perhaps, I’m now a former fan. I’m not being fickle. But my feelings have been hurt.
Allow me to explain….
Arianna has a new book out; THE HUFFINGTON POST COMPLETE GUIDE TO BLOGGING (Simon and Schuster). I got excited when it came out a few months ago. I contacted her publicist and asked if it might be possible to interview Arianna?
Her publicist said SURE! She told me that she would get back with me. So I waited.
This seemed like an ideal situation. I have this blog and I was thrilled at the prospect of speaking to Arianna about blogging. I planned to tape our conversation so that it could air on WYSO Public Radio, an NPR station! It would have been broadcast in the slot that directly follows Left, Right and Center. Perfect, right?
Her publicist knew all this good stuff about the radio interview and my blog and that I was an Arianna fan. I stayed in touch with her publicist. She told me that she was trying to book an interview in December around the holidays. I indicated that I would be very flexible about scheduling it because I really wanted to talk to Arianna….
Well, I haven’t heard from her publicist since the last time that I e-mailed her. I asked what was up with the interview? No further response. Nothing- DEAD AIR.
So what am I supposed to think? Should I assume that Arianna doesn’t know anything about my interest in an interview? Should I write it off to a sudden wave of apathy on the part of her publicist? No, I’m not going to do that. Here’s why…
This publicist is one of the good ones. We have worked together on a number of projects in the past and everything always went off without a hitch. This silent treatment is therefore way out of character.
So I am starting to get a more sinister, paranoid vibe. I have to think that Arianna Huffington simply blew off the interview. I’m going to assume that her publicist told her that Vick Mickunas in Dayton, Ohio wanted to talk to Arianna and that Ms. Huffington said NO WAY in that gorgeous Greek accent of hers…..
Oh, Arianna! SOB……

Arianna’s publicist just e-mailed me. She never mentioned Arianna. She’s trying to pitch me on another book?By Mike

Vick, I’m of the same opinion as Mark from St. Paul. You should hook up with Tbogg. Like Mark, I think in a lot ways TBogg is the John Stewart of the blogosphere. Would be a much more entertaining interview than Arianna, IMHO. Check him out.By Raoul

I’m a little dissapointed that the real Blowfly probably doesn’t pay any attention to this blog, but oh well. I still think he invented rap music, or at least took it in a different direction than it’s original forebearer’s. I’m talking about Jimmy Dean (‘Big Bad John’), Red Sovine (‘Phantom 309’), etc. Wow, this is quite a divergence from Vick’s original post about Arianna. God, that’s why I love this blog! You can sub-reference your way any way you want to go. I think I’ll stop now as I am getting on my own nerves.By Blowfly

Raoul, I’m not the original Blowfly, and I can’t really even describe myself as a fan - but I agree that Blowfly has not gotten his due as the rap pioneer that he was(is). I will go out on a limb and say that I think the chances are greater that Arianna reads this blog than Blowfly reads it (just a hunch). No Passaran.By vick

Thanks to everybody for all the advice. I don’t think Arianna reads this blog. But you never know? Perhaps her publicist will hear about this post? I’ll keep you posted….By Mark from St Paul

Gee, for a former GOP housewife, Arianna doesn’t get much respect around here. Never developed a HuffPo habit, and I’ve been weening myself from the Great Orange Satan (Kos). The future of blogging is TBogg, just as The Daily Show rules the cable universe. No one wants straight news anymore. Without the laffs all you can do is cry.By Raoul

Blowfly, I bet I am not the only one intrigued by the reference behind your ‘nom de plume’. I was hoping that maybe you are the original “Blowfly” who in my view invented rap music with those dance party sex-rap albums from the ‘70’s (or maybe the ‘60’s……regardelss, it was many a good brain cell ago). All I know is he socked a lot of soul to our asses and man, was he funny. Are you he?By downsized

Be persistent. These are busy times with the inaugural, bailout bickering, the economy sinking deeper into the depression. Plus, she’s probably on vacation this time of year. Patience. She’ll be worth the wait. Raoul’s boss Dick Cheney may have intercepted the e-mail. Who knows?By Blowfly

Vick, I’m sure if she knew you the way we know you she’d be beating down your door pleading for forgiveness (in her gorgeous Greek accent), OR maybe Raoul is on to something - I mean “Blowfly” is really not the kind of nom de plume that gets the chicks all hot and bothered (especially for those that get the reference - which is probably none). Maybe I should consider something more appealing like “Andy Rooney” to help you out?By edo

At the tone the time will be 2:20 PM Eastern Time… Maybe Bill Bryson told her you would pester her to tears about Des Moines details… give it some time and check back, they may be swamped, meanwhile try to get Carl Hiaasen or Neil Steinberg (if you haven’t all ready) two journalists that also write books…By IRISHGUY

Wow, you’d think she’d love to do an interview for a fellow traveler! Sorry to hear it.By Raoul

Vick, take heart. My guess is Arianna probably checked out your blog and found creepy, conservatives like me contributing all manner of right wing drivel and decided you must be part of the cabal trying to ruin our country with conservative bloginisms. Or, maybe her boss George Soros told her to stay away from you and your conservative blog-buddies. Either way, I think you should stop chasing her and let her come to you. I would love to listen to the interview, so keep us posted. I think your devoted followers will have a lively time in the blogosphere when and if it comes about.
