Tom Daschle vs. breast feeding?

This whole Tom Daschle thing really bugs me. This guy has been feathering his nest ever since he lost his seat in the US Senate. He has gotten rich and conveniently neglected to pay some of his tax obligations until he was offered a post in the Obama cabinet. A post where he would be dealing with some of the same parties who have been feathering his nest so lavishly.

Something smells rotten here. I hope Tom will do the decent thing and withdraw his name from consideration.

I don’t even want to think about that Daschle though. I would rather consider the subject of breast feeding….

My mom wasn’t a person who made a big deal out of her personal philosophy. There were things that really mattered to her. If you got to know her you found out what those things were. Here are some of the things that she cared about:

Friendship. My mom could never have enough friends. When she died they had to convene two separate seatings for her memorial services to accommodate just the friends who were able to attend.

Sharing good food with her friends. No need to explain that particular joy…

Breast feeding. She raised six kids and believed that nursing her children was essential. That it reinforced that timeless bond between mother and child. That it was vital for getting her babies off to a good, healthy start.

I thought about her today when I opened the mail and found a book that she would have heartily endorsed. It’s The Breastfeeding Mother’s Guide to Making More Milk (McGraw/Hill) by Diana West, IBCLC, and Lisa Marasco, M.A., IBCLC.

Mother’s milk or Tom Daschle? It wasn’t even a choice…

There are honest (poor) politicians. Daschle isn’t one of them.

And one more thing…how much money has to be earned to owe $128,000 in taxes? I was so disappointed when I heard this about Daschle. I thought he was an honest person. One of these days I’ll realize it is difficult, if not impossible, for the words honest and politician to be said together.

Vick, I knew you were powerful. I do appreciate the President owning up to the “mistakes” of his choosing these people. Moving on to the other topic, twenty years ago an El Greco exhibit visited The Toledo Museum of Art. I took two young girls who I knew through the Big Brother/Big Sister program. We came upon a portrait of the Blessed Virgin feeding Baby Jesus. Keeping in mind there were no Playtex nursers 2000 years ago, the two girls stopped, pointed and said in unison, “Look! A dirty picture!” I cautioned them that Mary was just feeding the infant in the same manner that their mother had fed them. Again in unison, “Uh uh! We were bottle fed.”

Gee whiz, Mr. Wilson, when I wrote this post last night and suggested that Tom Daschle withdraw from his nomination to the Obama cabinet I never imagined that he would do it! He just did! Breast feeding trumphs over cronyism!

Breast feeding has been in the news lately as Facebook, the social networking site, has been expunging photos they deem to be offensive from their website; they are pix of mothers nursing their babies. While it isn’t hard to find shots of lascivious, unclad people on the site if you make the effort to look for them, apparently nursing moms are simply too racy for those self appointed guardians of morality over on FB…

Vick, I think there’s a lady in California who just became the mother of octuplets who would be interested in that book!

Well Vick: It goes hand in hand in that the politicians have been feeding at the teat of society forever.Nothing new. I say, “Good books…and wine!” Ok. Best.
