are you a Survivor? Take the test…

One of the most hyped books of the year (so far) came out yesterday. Those full page ads in the New York Times are placed there to attract our attention. There it was; “THE SURVIVORS CLUB: The Secrets and Science that Could Save Your Life” by Ben Sherwood.

The breathless press release for this book proclaims:

In the tradition of Freakonomics and The Tipping Point, THE SURVIVORS CLUB reveals the hidden side of life and death, including:

? How to survive a plane crash

? Why righties live longer than lefties

? Why regular prayer can add as many as seven years to your life

? Why birthdays and holidays may be hazardous to your health

? Where the “best” place to have a heart attack is

? Why some people really do have all the luck while others are more accident prone

Of course there is a special website, thesurvivorsclub.org where you can take a test to discover your SURVIVOR IQ.

I’m going to take the test right now and report back to you with my rating.

If you take the test please report back with your findings. Find out your SURVIVOR IQ … What do you think about the test, the book, the whole concept?

Is it pure hype? Or, is there something to it? The thing that piqued my interest is the fact that the website is using a dot.org domain name. Those domain names are only available for certified NON-PROFIT organizations….

Vick, I know what you mean. Your use of the phrase “absolute worst answer” as opposed to “most unlikely response”, made it sound (at least to me)as if you felt a believer was the worst category in which to reside.

I believe in a lot of things, Irish. All I’m saying is that when I took the test and picked the absolute worst answer from each category the result was that I was considered a BELIEVER. Why don’t you do the same thing. Answer the questions with the most unlikely response for you in each part. I want to know what it calls you when you’re done. I’m guessing that you cannot get a final designation that sounds negative no matter what you respond. OK? Maybe it will call you a BELIEVER, too.

Well, well Irish. Actually, I’m not surprised. I thought the questions were well done. I went back and picked all the worst answers that I could and the result was that it said I’m a BELIEVER…..isn’t that a hoot?

I came up as a THINKER:”You see problems clearly, using intelligence and creativity to overcome adversity, relying on your brain to meet challenges.” (Celebrity realists: Steve Jobs, Hillary Clinton, Chelsey Sullenberger) These kinds of things are always entertaining. Though on most short tests like this it is pretty easy to manipulate the available answers to tilt it whatever way you want. You can see what answers fit specific patterns from one question to another. I’ve taken some much longer and more involved tests and I have to say, it’s sometimes amazing how accurate they can be.

Here’s my Survivor IQ rating: REALIST- “You know that life is hard so you face facts and do whatever is efficient and effective to achieve your goals.” (Celebrity realists: Sheryl Crow and Colin Powell). Take the test. I want to know how you rated as a Survivor…
