growth industries in 2009…
I have been thinking a lot about the economy lately. Lots of people losing their jobs-losing their houses-their investments-their rationality…
It tends to put a wee crimp in ye olde holiday merriments. So I have been thinking, wondering, what will be the growth industries in the new year? Where will they be hiring? What jobs will be hot?
Here are some of my notions on that topic. Let me know whether you agree, disagree, or just have some other ideas.
Here are the jobs that I think will be viable and my thinking on what will make them in demand in 2009:
Bill collectors - there will be a lot of bills to collect. That Wall Street con artiste who has Ponzi-ed his “clients” to the tune of 50 billion dollars will certainly be hiding out from the bill collectors. Lots of delinquent bills coming due in 2009. Time to pay up.
Liquor sales - a growth industry in hard times. Sad but true. Drink yourself into oblivion to forget all the bills coming due. (See above).
Chimneysweeps - Even with fuel prices in decline folks will be turning to wood burning stoves for heat. My next door neighbors just installed one and they went from fretting over propane consumption in their frigid home to basking in an 80 degree family room. Chimneysweeps will have all the work that they can handle. Heaven knows we dropped a bundle upgrading our chimney last summer. Glad we did.
Security guards - with lots of people out of work and lots of things to steal (that 50 billion dollar schmuck knows all about that) there will be a high demand for security in insecure times.
Book reviewers - my phone is ringing off the hook right now-everybody wants me to write book reviews for next year… hey, a guy can dream, can’t he?
These are just a few of the potential employments that came to mind right off the top of my head. What are your thoughts for growth industries coming up in 2009? There have to be some, right? Your input is greatly desired…

I’m a 52 year old who will lose my job (according to my own contractor HR person) because of age/sex discrimination to a 23 year old. Age discrimination is alive and well in Dayton OH, especially at the base. It’s legal, because no one will do anything about it. So I guess I’ll be selling credit cards after my unemployment runs out, if I can even get that stupid job! How do people like that sleep at night?By vick

From 1990-200? or so I wrote resumes for thousands of clients. I don’t do it anymore because it got to be too depressing. There just isn’t much out there for most people. Still, it was a shock to me last Sunday when I bought my first deadtree Sunday newspaper in years and discovered that instead of the Star Tribune’s Help Wanteds taking up three sections, they now only take up three pages! And Minnesota is allegedly doing better than most states, jobwise.By vick

As I am in the middle of finals, I am thinking that schools will continue to grow. People are always turning to more education. Also, I think that “life coach” or “career strategist” type jobs will grow as people contemplate various life changes as they lose their jobs.By downsized

When the bread/soup lines are long the organ grinder is king..or is it the monkee? The human resource staffers are now monarchs. After 30 years of business experience the only “offers” I’ve had are for commission insurance sales. Somehow, I don’t qualify for minimum wage custodial, mail clerks, or even retail. Gee, I’m sure it couldn’t be my age. Whoever said 55 is the new 35 never posted a resume. But, to your question, organ donors and prison guards may be growth sectors. Just be sure you’re 20-30 something…with a law degree and an expertise in IS/IT.By lmj

Well, there’s room for Americorps and Jesuit Volunteers as there is no longer an economy for our new college grads to join. Plenty of need there - just no salary. I would think any education or health related field would be good - get smart so your financial well being doesn’t disappear (again), and the health field for all the people with financial stress related issues. And there is always mortuary science for the liquor and jumper set…or politics for those with any better ideas. We could hope that there are openings in the correctional system for all the thieves and liars due for punishment but they will probably all not even get notified they’ve been caught. That news will publish on Tuesday and won’t be delivered.
