the worst president ever?

As the bicentennial of the birth of Abraham Lincoln approaches we are seeing a plethora of Lincoln books being issued to mark the occasion.

I have a stack of Lincoln books to read. Here are a few of the titles that I have set aside so far:

OUR LINCOLN - New Perspectives on Lincoln and His World (Norton)

GIANTS - The Parallel Lives of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln (Twelve) by John Stauffer

TRIED BY WAR - Abraham Lincoln as Commander in Chief (The Penguin Press) by James M. McPherson

ABRAHAM LINCOLN - Great American Historians on Our Sixteenth President (Public Affairs)

LINCOLN - President-Elect (Simon and Schuster) by Harold Holzer

THE LINCOLN ANTHOLOGY - Great Writers on His Life and Legacy from 1860 to Now (Library of America)

As we celebrate the legacy of Abraham Lincoln we can take a moment to reflect upon his place among our presidents. Was he our greatest president? Some would argue that he was.

Which begs the question; who was our worst president ever? Was it Nixon? Buchanan? Grant?

Or, is it that fellow who is quietly melting into obscurity as he observes the final days of his term?

So what do you think? Who was our greatest president? And who has been our worst?

Mark - I stand corrected. I guess I just get a little tired of holding one party up as virtuous and the other as evil. Certainly the Repubs have had their share of bad actors but with ex NJ Gov McGrevey, Ex NY Gov Spitzer followed by Gov Patterson whose 1st official act seemed to be admitted affairs, ex Congressman Jefferson from La, Charley Rangel seems to be having some ethics issues and of course Gov Blagojevich of Illinois - it gets to be kind of like a poker game where I’ll see you “bad guy” and raise you one. There’s enough of ‘em on both sides and I’m a bit tired of it.

Jefferson Davis?! Oh my, we are ranging far afield now…

By Bill

December 10, 2008 12:30 PM | Link to this

Worst? Jefferson Davis, who led half the country out of the union to protect Slavery. Second worst? Lincoln, who started a war to get them back (not to end slavery, or the Emancipation Proclamation would have been in 1861 when he took office instead of 1863 when his popularity was down.) Third Worst? Absolutely George Bush, who lied to get us into a war he’d been planning since his first week in office, and was too financially irresponsible to raise taxes to pay for it. (What, you think borrowing $5 Trillion wouldn’t affect the credit markets?). Jimmy Carter? Not the most competent, but at least he was ethical, and Bush’s incompetence has far exceeded Jimmy’s, just as his dishonesty is even past Nixon’s. If you partisan Republicans want to insult a Democrat, LBJ’s a better target - he also lied to start a war he couldn’t win, though he also did some good things in his time.

Worst President ever - George W. Bush… Second - Bush Sr. Third - Jimmy Carter (although many of the things he said we must protect against we did not - he had the foresight - youtube his speeches and see how prophetic he was…) Best Presidents - I would say FDR and Ike top the lists. Clinton should be on the top because of creating the budget surpluses 6 of 8 years. I also think Reagan is one of the bests, although his economics policy wasn’t all that great.

who said when running for pres the 3 conditions precedent for committing american troops to battle were 1- must be clearly in the national interest,2- we will not get invloved in nation building, 3- we will have a clear exit strategy. of course it was george w. which of those applies to iraq? perhaps ask the thousands of dead or wounded amercians or the tens of thousands of dead iraqis. other presidents have certainly made mistakes but not with the short and long term consequences of george bush’s mistakes. not to mention the trillions of dollars in costs we could have used to help us out of this economic mess. thank god we may have the smartest person in the room in the next president. we certaainly were not thaqt fortunate with george w and thousands pay the tab for his mistakes.

John Adams. There is no mistaking that Bush was reading a biography on John Adams when he was waiting to become president. And don’t confuse the visi1onary things he did as a revolutionary with what he did as a president. 1) He politicized the government. He founded the first political party, the Federalists and he lived long enough to kill it. 2) He ran the nasty campaign ever that ended with one of the vp candidates shooting the other dead. 3)Bush learned all of his stuff off of Adams, not Rove. He declared a national emergency and pushed through the Sedition Act, The Naturalization Act. The Alien Act, and the Alien Enemies Act in order to slap down the opposition. 4) He packed the court was Federalist judges when he was leaving. 5)Held negotiations with the enemy—even though he said that he never would talk to the enemy—one french despot, Napoleon Bonaparte. napoleon was his kind of guy: he was exporting democracy! seriously! does any of this sound familiar to you?

FDR was the worst. Only Jackson and Lincoln came close to abusing the power of the Presidency like FDR, and at least Lincoln abused his authority for the cause of saving the union. FDR prolonged the depression and had the unmitigated gaul to run for a 3rd and 4th term, even when he was practically incapacitated. His weakness led to the Soviet enslavement of over 900 million people. Carter, Grant, Teddy Roosevelt, Arthur, and Wilson would be in contention for the 2nd worst. Bush’s only sins are trying too hard to accomodate the left. Everything and anything that Bush has done wrong will be magnified tenfold by this B.O. guy.

What Defines A Bad President? The criteria to use is to what degree has a president diminished sovereignty of the individual states, how aggressive was his administration in an interventionist international foreign policy and what assault of destruction did his minions do on honest money and national debt, wrote Sartre. However … each successive administration build upon the tyranny of the past … Abe Lincoln was the worst. He killed the last hope of a genuine Republic. Among Sartres list of others: Hamilton, Wilson, FDR, LBJ, and Clinton. What appears to make GWB worse, at present, is his surrounding cast of scoundrels. By appearances, no one among his retinue seems to have the scruples of a gnat. But were those courtiers of Bill Clinton (Madeline Albright) much better? Indeed, one respected leftist writer claims Clinton was far worse than George W. Bush. The Worst Of The Worst A list of The Worst Presidents Ever would be impossible to compile precisely. How would you arrange it and by what criteria? Short term or long term harm to the Republic? The number of US citizens killed and the trillions of taxpayer dollars funneled from the poor to the rich? The repudiation of humane principles (war crimes) and moral values? The betrayal of public trust and the blatant disregard for future generations? The crass enrichment of cronies? Or all of the above?

For “Blowfly”. You say “…the axis of evil which has lead to a nuclear N. Korea and the way toward a nuclear Iran”. Wow, can’t get much more wrong than that. Please do your homework. Go back to the Clinton Administration and look up the failed efforts by Bill and Madeline Albright and come back and report your findings. I’ll do it for you, giving North Korea billions of dollars for not weaponizing their nuclear efforts worked out well…NOT! And now it has been the Bush Administration that has at least gotten N. Korea back to the table for six-party talks. But I suppose you would prefer not to talk about that little bit of history. Abraham Lincoln is considered one of the greatest presidents of all time, but if he were president today he would be considered one of the worst. He would be attacked and demeaned because of his being a republican. His agenda would be squelched by the liberal media and he would look like an idiot. Bush would have been successful if he had gotten support during war time from the Democrats like every other Pres has had. Instead he got treason from people willing to sell out the troops to promote their own agendas. Democrats wanted us to lose this war. They rejoiced when an American Soldier was killed because it helped their cause. Can you imagine Republicans doing this during WWII when FDR was President? No way.

Carter is by far the worst, in least in modern history. Not only was he irreverent in terms of major policy, his actions as an ex-president have been borderline treasonous. I must say that the comments of Mark from St Paul are interesting, especially since he comes from a state which is this close to electing a porn loving, tax evading fool like Al Franken. Speaking of morally reprehensible, I assume your proud to have Gov. Rod Blagojevich in the Democractic fold? Unless you lived through Carter, you don’t know how bad it was. Malaise, weak and dis spirited military (of course, much of that was due to the liberal Democratic Congress at the time), clueless as to what to do with foreign policy or domestic.

Vick, as usual, you bring out the best of the local blogs. Lincoln is our best President for many reasons, including: 1)He had to sneak into Washington to take his oath, 2)Our great experiment in a government of, by, and for the people has never faced a greater challenge than the Civil War, 3)His own cabinet alternately sided with and against him, a microcosm of the War itself, 4)Almost all of the most heralded leaders of the day, military and political, proved themselvse unworthy of the tasks asked of them, leaving him alone to make the decisions forced upon him by a dreadful lack of competency, and 5)He perservered through personal tragedy, including the loss of a beloved son, and the anguish of living with a tortured, depressed, sanity-challenged wife. On top of all these points stands the most important lesson for all Presidents past and future; having the courage and conviction to do what you believe is ultimately right and just, and not giving in to the ‘nattering nabobs of negativism’. Give me Lincoln, and if I can’t have him, I’ll take Reagan, for the simple fact he made me feel my own responsibility for making my own contribution to our great heritage.

Carter made too many promises and was unable to fulfill all of them. Nixon couldn’t do diddley-squat for pro-life on account of Watergate. Bush overall has to be the worst for his complacency before 9/11 and doing nothing for those who have been jobless (and now homeless due to foreclosures) since our jobs were “outsourced”….enter the loanshark storefronts and other preditors who are reducing Dayton to one giant ghetto market for all of the Carlton Sheets wannabees.

Worst prez to date? I’ll tell you in about 2 years. Don’t forget about what costs our government more than anything else: welfare (ala F.D.R.) Bush did not cause the war, but was stuck in it. Clinton ignored the certain radical Muslim issue out of arrogance (or ignorance). He had plenty of warnings. But as for Bush, our economy sucks, unfortunately every time we get a Republican. But the Dems aren’t so smart either. So, forget party lines. If you make less than $100K a year, suck it up, because none of them really care what you think anyway. They just want you to shut up and pay your taxes. If you are on welfare and have been, then YOU shut up, because you have not paid into the system that costs the rests of us our chilren’s education. If you are in the UAW, then you can shut up, because you get lotsa money at the expense of all of us (now that we have to bail out the big 3). If you work on wall street, you can shut up too, because I am bailing your butt out too! The rest of us at least can complain with dignity. :-)

Jimmy Carter was perhaps the most inept President of modern time. It’s difficult to compare the pre-WW II Presidents with the more recent ones as the times, economies and culture were so vastly different. Actually, i think President Bush has done a very solid job considering the economy he inherited, the 9/11 attacks and aftermath, constant hounding and obstruction by the far-left media and liberal politicians, etc. He has stuck to his knitting and avoided another catastrophic attack. It’s we, the people, who have gone soft, apathetic and lazy. We have squandered our heritage and more. It’s difficult to look successful leading a bunch of quacking ducks. I wish Mr. Obama well.

Bush. The thing you don’t want to do as a president is make a big mistake, and he’s made more than I can count. From the invasion of Iraq, the axis of evil which has lead to a nuclear N. Korea and the way toward a nuclear Iran, turning the justice department into something Joe McCarthy would be proud of, illegal wiretaps and data mining, setting aside presiding over the worse economic collapse since the Great Depression. How can you compare that to Carter? His great sin was he couldn’t decide what to do. We certainly need some time to get a perspective on Bush II, but I can’t seen how history can redeem his presidency. The Bush presidency is even sadder since after 9/11 he had more goodwill than any president and did nothing with it.

Vick, I think “Jimmy Carter” is the Republican way of saying, “we’re never going to say we’re sorry for what Bush did.” But blaming Carter for Truman’s hideous error in having the democratically elected Mohammed Mossadegh removed from power is heinously misinformed. The Shah was a sharp stick in the eye of Islam for decades. Carter just happened to be in office when the Ayatollah pulled the stick out. Likewise Carter just happened to be in office when Reagan’s lieutenants conducted their own unConstitutional foreign policy deal to make sure the hostages weren’t set free before the 1980 election. Blaming Carter for Islamofascism is as nonsensical as it is ahistorical.

Worst? Worst as in? How are we defining worst? Pick a president and I am sure one could find a quality strong or lacking. Lincoln? Over rated. Adams (prez #2)? Under rated. Washington? Sure he was the first but exactly what was he able to accomplish in such a short time? As to presidents of the modern times, JFK? Made a few good speeches, but barely got past the Russians. Regan? Muscled Gorbachev to “tear down that wall.” A great leader. So many others. Great topic Vick. Love when discussion is generated. Cannot wait to see your reviews on the Lincoln texts. Thanks again.

When the Republicans put on their jackboots, I left the party of my birth. Vick, for your commenters to blame Jimmy Carter for their choosing to have eaten the apple of sinful demagoguery is shameful. Modern Republicanism is half demagoguery, half racism, and all Karl Rove. 20/20 hindsight is a marvelous thing, isn’t it? Thanks to the poster who just mentioned Harry Truman. Remember him? Some of you might have heard the interview I did with the historian Robert Dallek that aired on WYSO this past Sunday. We discussed Dallek’s recent biography of President Truman. Did you know that Truman’s approval rating was the lowest in history at one point? The only one who has ever come close to that dismal approval rating is our current president. Now, with the benefit of hindsight, many view Truman as a great president. Irony of ironies: we are having this discussion right now and I just opened my mail to find another Lincoln book. This is another edition in the fine series of presidential biographies like the Truman book I just mentioned; The American Presidents Series that was the project overseen by the late Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. The author of this Lincoln biography is none other than former Senator George McGovern, the man who lost in 1972 in that Nixon landslide victory. I would love to interview George McGovern about this book. Now there’s a man who can take the long view of American history; he was a part of it!

Carter and W can’t be the worst because they both had to deal with situations that I’m not sure any of the “best” Presidents could have had much success with. Clinton can’t be the worst because things were actually quite decent in the 90s and the Republican Congress has to take blame/credit for any failings/positives of that administration. Plus, nobody in the last 30 years comes close to Buchanan or Grant or Hoover in terms of being bad. You have to be blindly hateful to think either Clinton or W was worse than any of them. As for the best, I think all of the Presidents that we rate as great are moderately overrated. Reagan really only had 2-3 good years as President out of 8. FDR’s track record had both wins and losses, no matter what perspective you come from. Teddy Roosevelt much more of a politician than his reputation states. Lincoln made many serious mistakes. And, Thomas Jefferson was a hypocrite who would have been impeached by the standards other Presidents have been held to. And, both Lincoln and Jefferson would have had trouble getting elected in modern America.

Carter by far is the worst president in my lifetime. Best? In my lifetime it would have to be JFK…vision to send us to the moon, cuba blockade…OK, vietnam wasn’t too hot. But it’s too bad his presidency was cut so short.

As bad as some think G.W.Bush is and has been, many of his predecessors did not have the calamities to face as he did. The devastating hurricanes and 9/11 attack, which was due partly to the flimsy acts of national security by Clinton. Carter Nixon, and Clinton in my opinion are candidates for worst ever. My choice for best would lie between Lincoln and Reagan.

Nixon was just an arrogant sob,but at least was smart enough to run the country. “W” on the other hand…was “do your best Geo.” and that was the worst of any president in history.

As with anything you almost need to categorize. For lacking ethics and integrity - Nixon and Clinton; For being a well intetioned, but an extremely poor leader - definitely Carter. As much as many would like to write in “W”, there needs to be some time and history pass so a more objective perspective can taken before an accurate assessment can be rendered.

The last GREAT Republican president was Eisenhower. Reagan pandered to the Jesus freaks, Bush 1 gave us the forerunner to the current debacle in Iraq by not going into Baghdad the first time, and Bush II is just an idiot. Just like the Jesus freaks. Please Lord! Save me from your followers!

‘Begging the question’ is a logical fallacy in which an initial claim is assumed to be true without evidence, other than the claim itself, or where an argument is based on that unproven claim. It does not mean ‘to give rise to the question.’

Vick, Carter was not only our worst President, and I voted for him, but is now our worst ex-President in a landslide. For all W’s faults, he still remains one of the few Presidents that ran campaigns based on a certain platform, and succeeded in following through on most of them, whether you supported the planks or not. In my view Lincoln stands out as the best.

So Time, you are saying that Nixon was the worst? Who was the best? Nixon may have been the worst but he is still my favorite president. He won me over when he said: “I am NOT a crook….”

It would have to be Nixon. Governor Bush believed in other peoples lies where Nixon created the fiction of the imperial presidency and believed his own.
