an interview with Tony Horwitz
Tony Horwitz is one my favorite writers. In books like CONFEDERATES IN THE ATTIC and BLUE LATITUDES he has tracked the broad arc of history and traced the steps of those who have forged it.
He is also one of my favorite authors to interview. I’m always excited when he has a new book out because it presents an opportunity to speak to him about it. Last winter I spoke to Geraldine Brooks, another gifted writer who just happens to be married to Horwitz. I asked her what Tony was working on and she told me that his book A VOYAGE LONG AND STRANGE - Rediscovering the New World (Henry Holt) would be published in the spring. I kept my ears open until…
Voila! The book was published recently.I interviewed Tony on WYSO Public Radio in Yellow Springs. If you missed it you can still listen to it by clicking here.

Your interview with Tony Horwitz left me wanting more. His thoughtful exuberance and insights are a delight. The story of Di Vacca (sic?)and the other three castaways have me thirsty for a book devoted to them. What a remarkable tale! Thanks for letting your readers know when you’re able to share time with the men and women behind the words. Now, I really have to get the book! I can barely wait for the voyage to begin.By Blowfly

I’m with Pete. I read Attic, out of reluctance. It didn’t look that interesting to me. It sat on my shelf for a long time. But, it was great look at a world that us Yankees find hard to imagine. Locked in time trying to win a way that has long been lost. It’s now on my shelf of my most favorite books.By prose

Nice to hear some good news following yet another huge storm out here in Iowa. Tony Horwitz quickly gained lofty status from this old reader with “Confederate in the Attic”. A good friend surprised me with a copy and the writing is nothing short of brilliant. As an avid reader of his genre I’m looking forward to his latest. Thanks for the tip and I urge your readers to listen. I sure will be.
