the thing about life
The book publishing game is slowing down for the holidays. Still, lots of galleys are coming out to alert us to what will come next, in say, February.
I just got a copy of THE THING ABOUT LIFE IS THAT ONE DAY YOU”LL BE DEAD by David Shields (Knopf) February, 6-2008.
Now that is profound. Shields quotes my current literary hero; J.M. Coetzee: “That, finally, is all it means to be alive, to be able to die.
Some chapter titles provide an inkling of what to expect next:
Our Birth is Nothing But Our Death Begun
News Flash:We are Animals
Sex and Death
Why Lionesses Prefer Dark Brunettes, or Why Both Men and Women are Attracted to Deep Voices
Ye Olde Mind-Body Problem
The Trouble with Being Food
Everything I Know I’ve Learned from My Bad Back
and
Death is the Mother of Beauty
Been there…(alive, that is)….not eager to end it any time soon-yet interested to read more on this topic.
