THE PRESIDENTIAL RECORDINGS - LYNDON B. JOHNSON - Toward the Great Society, February 1, 1964 - May 31, 1964 (W.W. Norton) November 16.

Wow! I’m a history buff and presidential history is one of my favorite historical areas- this three volume collection of transcripts from the Johnson White House is truly fascinating. Dick Nixon wasn’t the first guy to tape his Oval Office conversations. Presidents began doing it in 1940 with FDR. Nixon marked the end of an era of secret taping of high level conversations. LBJ also recorded conversations at his ranch in Texas. The majority of these recordings were made from phone conversations. Amazing material!

THE ADVENTURES OF AMIR HAMZA by Ghalib Lakhnavi and Abdullah Bilgrami. (The Modern Library) October 30.

Unabridged and uncensored for the first time in English. This new translation by Musharraf Ali Farooqi takes one of the greatest tales of heroic ambition from the 7th century and introduces it to a new audience. The definitive version of this Indo-Persian epic adventure was written in Urdu during the 19th century by Lakhnavi and Bilgrami. Before we consider something as foolhardy as invading yet another region that has a history that spans millenia perhaps we should get to know the people better. In Iran this text is considered a classic-for good reason.

Twenty Thousand Roads: The Ballad of Gram Parsons and His Cosmic American Music by David N. Meyer. (Villard) November 1.

Gram Parsons was one of my musical idols during my high school days. He hung out with cool people; THE BYRDS, THE ROLLING STONES, THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS, William Burroughs, Emmy Lou Harris, and many more. He made great music and he left a beautiful corpse after his heroin overdose in the early ‘70’s. This is his story. Even after he died there were strange goings on involving G.P. His friends stole his coffin and burned his body out in the southern California desert. I have been waiting for this one!
