Life of Pi-the deluxe version

Yann Martel’s LIFE OF PI was one of the most impressive books of 2002. It’s the story of a teenaged boy who is set adrift under the most bizarre circumstances. He was crossing the Pacific Ocean on a boat filled with exotic animals. A disaster occurs and he finds himself stranded on the ocean with some of these wild creatures, most notably, a majestic, hungry Bengal tiger.
They drift together, surviving somehow, some of them. If you haven’t read it I won’t give away too much.
The book has just been re-issued in a deluxe edition. It’s good sized, between regular hardcover dimensions and coffee table sized.
Most impressively, this version contains some fantastic illustrations by Tomislav Torjanac that depict key scenes in the story. They are lovely pictures. Some are almost photographic in style.
Martel came out of nowhere with this book. His more recent work has failed to attract the audience that LIFE OF PI did. It is a special book. He must have been in thrall to complete inspiration when he wrote it? The new, illustrated edition is frosting on an already delicious cake.
Have you read it? What did you think about it?
