confessions of a galley slave (vol. XI)
New books are dropping like the acorns of October. Here are some that should be fun:

CLAPTON—the Autobiography (Broadway Books) by Eric Clapton. This highly anticipated book is under embargo for the next week. (I’m not allowed to talk about it). Nobody expected Eric Clapton to live long enough to write about it. He did! (I’m not allowed to say any more about it). Embargoes are serious things. Publishers don’t like it when reviewers violate embargoes. (Unless, of course, you are the New York Times).

MAD about STAR WARS—Thirty Years of Classic Parodies (Del Rey)-written by Jonathan Bresman/forward by George Lucas. How can I resist? For those of us who had our funny bones tuned by Mad Magazine during that publication’s glory years, how can we resist? Forward, into the past…

Every popular book begets it’s own parody. THE DANGEROUS BOOK FOR DOGS (Villard) by Rex & Sparky is just such a book (if I have to tell you what HUGE book is being mocked, well why bother?). “Rex and Sparky wrote this parody without authorization (because they are dogs and they do what they want). We can finally understand the innate attractiveness of those foul smells that every dog must roll in.
and that’s not all…..

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! It’s THE BEST AMERICAN COMICS OF 2007 (Houghton Mifflin) edited by Chris Ware. 341 pages of the best comics of the year. Whoopeeee!

The latest installment in the incredible collaboration known as POST SECRET is A LIFETIME OF SECRETS (William Morrow) by Frank Warren. The postcards just keep pouring in to Warren’s Maryland mailbox. People are sending him their secrets. Many of the amazing postcard images and stories turn up in Warren’s series of books.

There’s that “embargo” word again! Must keep the Navy busy, keeping container-loads of reading matter offshore.
