Ohio is a wild and crazy place

I moved to Ohio back in 1993. Over the past 14 years I have come to the realization that Ohio is a wild and crazy place.
A new book seems to validate my belief that Ohio is rather curious. OHIO CURIOSITIES (Insider’s Guide) by Sandra Gurvis is a tour guide to all the most bizarre things that Ohio brings, to the table.
Let me show you what I mean. At the Maid-Rite Sandwich Shop in Greenville they stick their chewing gum wads on the outside wall while they order. Gross!
Then there’s “Scareborn.” That would be Foy’s Variety Store in Fairborn where it is Halloween all year long and I would never go there because of that poor monkey.
Don’t forget the Golden Lamb in Lebanon where a dozen U.S. presidents have spent the night. Mark Twain and Charles Dickens were other guests of note. They say that it is haunted. It’s true, George W. Bush stopped by.
Finally, don’t miss Hartman’s Rock Garden in Springfield. You will feel completely stoned.
That is just SW Ohio, this book takes you all over the state. It’s weird. It’s wacky. It’s Ohio.

Oh, yes, I know it’s the newest of the the type. The Pohlen book is very good, actually better than the worthwhile Zurcher book. Weird Ohio is different in that it focuses more on the supernatural. I will check this new book out, this is a great state with plenty of fun stuff just a short drive away from whereever you are.By vick mickunas

The Zurcher book is quite good. I have not read the other books that you mention so without being able to compare each one with the others, I cannot definitively state what might be different about this new book. It’s the newest book of it’s kind and I mentioned it so that folks would be aware of it. One can hope that it has some new info that was not included in those other books. Thanks, for your note!By Dr. B

Considering Neil Zurcher already covered this with his Ohio Oddities and Jerome Pohlen as well with his Oddball Ohio, not to mention Ohio’s entry in the Weird series, what does this book have that the others don’t?By vick mickunas

Barbara, I know that you are a sensitive soul and I can assure you that you don’t want to know any more about that monkey.By Barbara Delaney

What’s the story on the monkey? The only thing I know about Fairborn, Ohio is that it was supposed to be the hometown of Stalker, one of the original G.I. Joes.By Laura

That poor monkey has been there so long that I don’t think it would survive change. It was brought there long before people gave any thought to how to treat animals. I’m sure Mike has no intention of ever getting another monkey when this one dies.
