my summer reading list

It’s that time again. Summer draws near and when you are packing your bag for the beach or wherever don’t forget to toss in a paperback along with the sunblock.
Paperbacks are portable. You can spill lemonade on them. When you are finished you can pass it along to that person who has been trying to read it over your shoulder.
Here’s my list of new paperbacks for summer reading relaxation:
“JESUS OUT TO SEA” by James Lee Burke (Simon and Schuster). James Lee Burke is one of my favorite writers. This is a collection of Burke’s short stories compiled from various sources. Perfect airline fare.
“LAKE WOBEGON DAYS” by Garrison Keillor(Penguin). Our family used to take our summer vacations on Minnesota lakes. Nothing conjures up those carefree memories like a novel by one of our leading humorists. Keillor has Minnesota nailed. His comedy runs the Iron Range from dry to dark wry.
“Life on the Mississippi” by Mark Twain (Modern Library).Twain is one of the undisputed giants of American literature. I have never read this book. What a treat!
“The Medici Conspiracy—the Illicit Journey of Looted Antiquities from Italy’s Tomb Raiders to the World’s Greatest Museums” by Peter Watson and Cecelia Todeschini (Public Affairs). I find this subject utterly fascinating.
“Spalding’s World Tour—the Epic Adventure That Took Baseball Around the Globe—and Made it America’s Game” by Mark Lamster (Public Affairs). When your team is in first place you think a lot about baseball. I do. Back in 1888 a group of major league all-stars made a trip around the world. This is their story.
Now I need to decide which book to read first? I choose James Lee Burke-that was a real no-brainer!
Happy reading!
