Phil Spector: Genius OR Weirdo ?

In publishing, timing is EVERYTHING.

As the former star music producer Phil Spector sits there in court wearing his page boy wig many people are surely wondering; is this guy NUTS?

Spector is accused of murdering a woman who came home with him late one night. A parade of seemingly normal women have taken the stand and given testimony that they spent time with Spector and that he is a bit peculiar in their estimation, even kinky.

Apparently, he had a thing for guns. He liked producing firearms when he wanted things. We can only speculate what went wrong that night. Spector stands accused of murdering a B movie actress. Did he shoot her? We’ll see.

A new book will be released during the first week of June that should do well since it is coming out at the height of this show business show trial. “TEARING DOWN THE WALL OF SOUND—The Rise and Fall of Phil Spector” (Knopf) by Mick Brown is a biography of the reclusive Spector.

Brown’s timing for publication should come as no surprise. His timing has been lucky since Day One. Brown interviewed Spector on December, 2002, at Spector’s estate.

Brown’s feature story ran in The London Telegraph on February 3, 2003. Less than 48 hours later, the actress Lana Clarkson was found shot to death in the foyer of Spector’s mansion.

Knopf has published 60, 000 copies of the book. Brown’s author tour will have a stop in Cleveland. That’s appropriate, too. Spector recorded hits for the Ronettes, the Righteous Brothers, Ike and Tina Turner, The Beatles and many others.

He should be respected as a musical architect who constructed his own little piece of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by dint of his prodigious recording career.

Now, he’s adding his own little wing to the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame.
