Amazoned out

I’m fascinated by Amazon.com. I never paid the company that much heed until I realized how much authors pay attention to Amazon.

Amazon.com sells a lot of books. They post hourly sales figures so you can check to see how a book is selling hour by hour. Apparently, there are people who are so interested in that information that they check it out frequently.

I interviewed one author a number of times on my radio show. He’s one of the more influential of our “new age-mystic-guru” writers. He has “people” who take care of him. The 3rd or 4th time I interviewed him I was informed by his “people” that they check the sales figures on Amazon right after he does an interview. If the book showed an increase in sales on Amazon after the interview then they would keep the interviewer on the list of “good radio shows.”

I stayed on their list and did more interviews. I wonder what would have happened if the book had dropped on the charts following my interview? My karma could have suffered.

I spoke to an author the other day who was jubilant about his Amazon numbers. His book had not yet been published. It had been ranked in the top 300 thousand on Amazon. A virtual non-entity. Then the book was featured on the front page of the Chicago Tribune Sunday Magazine. The book instantly vaulted 100 thousand places. The author was ecstatic. I shared in his happiness.

I’m in the Amazone. I feel their pain. I feel their joy. I check the numbers every hour. Please, don’t let me write a book.
